GSS’s Things We LOVE :: DIY Peony Flowers!

Peonies are all the rage these days and despite seeing them everywhere, we couldn’t love them more!  But, let’s face it-  Some brides on a budget and DIY brides don’t have it in their budgets to use these gorgeous stems… until now!

We’re so excited to share with you this DIY project by Ez that we found on her blog, Creature Comforts.  These little beauties have tons of potential not only for wedding décor, but also as fashion accessories, gift wrap accents and so much more!  The process to make these peonies is rather lengthy.  So, while we will cover the highlights here, we encourage you to visit Ez’s Creature Comforts Blog and watch her tutorial videos.  You can see Ez’s full DIY Peony tutorial by clicking here.

Materials You’ll Need:

-          Candle

-          Lighter or Matches

-          Chiffon or Lightweight Satin in peony colors – white, soft to bright pinks, and vibrant fuchsia (fabric MUST be polyester)

-          Fabric scissors

-          Embroidery thread in yellow

-          Sewing needle

-          Barrette, hair comb or hairpin (optional) – for hair accessory

-          Pin back (optional) – for brooch

-          Double sided adhesive dots (optional) – for gift topper

Project should be performed in a well-ventilated room

Step 1

Cut out (5) circles (shapes do not have to be perfect) out of fabric. (5) circles = one flower. Circles should range in size from 3.5-4” in diameter. Top circle of flower should be a little smaller than the rest.

Step 2

To create the petals you rotate each circle over an open flame. Fabric will curl when exposed to heat.

Step 3

Once circles are curled you will cut slits on all four sides of circle, being careful not to cut all the way through petals.

(Note: We found Ez’s Steps 4 & 5 the following steps to be tedious and quite dangerous, so we decided to skip it. Use your best judgment and make the project your own!)

Step 6

Create a yellow pom-pom for the flower’s center.  You can view a video tutorial on how to create the yellow pom-poms by clicking here.  You will sew this pom-pom onto five layers of petals to create one flower.

Step 7

Once the flower is complete use these little cuties however you like!

From Jen:

I recently used these peonies as napkin rings at a couple’s shower! The bride is using peonies on her wedding day so I thought this would be a unique and fun way to incorporate her favorite flower while still having that handcrafted touch! She loved them so much we are using the fabric peonies on her wedding day alongside the real stems!

GSS’s Things We LOVE :: Sole Mates

We have a fun find for you in wedding trends! Have you ever been to an outdoor wedding and the heel of your to-die-for Manolo’s start sinking into the ground???  Only to pull your heel out of the ground to see that it’s covered in mud… sigh….  Have no fear…. SoleMates to the rescue!!!  These little flexible grips slip right onto the heel of your shoe, creating more surface area on your heel, preventing you from sinking into the ground or getting stuck in cracks.  What a wonderful idea!!!  And at $9.95 a pair, these little babies are perfectly affordable… Especially since you can reuse them over and over again!!!

Here’s what SoleMates‘ website has to say about the product:

The SoleMates High Heeler™ takes the pressure off… of your heels.

Discreet and easy to use, the SoleMates High Heeler™ attaches easily to most stiletto and kitten heels. By increasing the surface area on the base of the heel, it reduces the pressure on this area and prevents the heel from sinking into grass or falling into cracks!

The patented design of the SoleMates High Heeler™ is mechanically engineered to fit snugly on most heels and yet the flexible material grips securely without damaging the heel or compromising the aesthetics of the shoe.

Wear the SoleMates High Heeler™ on grass, cobblestones, grates, and more…and experience the difference!

SoleMates is also offering a discount to Brides.  Here’s the information straight from SoleMates‘ website on how it works:

GSS’s Things We LOVE :: Personalized Bridal Clutches by ANGEE W.!

A couple of years ago we introduced you to the fabulous clutches created by ANGEE W. (Click here to see that post.)  Just when we thought their clutches couldn’t get any better-  we’ve now learned that ANGEE W. has started personalizing some of their bridal clutches with images of you and your fiance!  She can include your engagement photo or a photo that you treasure onto the lining of your ANGEE W. clutch bag.  The personalized photo lining service will integrate your treasured photograph into your bridal attire.  Whether it’s a photo of your pet, a photo from your first date with your fiance, or a sweet moment captured at an engagement photo shoot, the photo will liven up and perform its magic every time you open your clutch bag.  Holy Moly- how great is that?!

Here’s a little bit about ANGEE W. via their Etsy page:

“ANGEE W. is a joint venture project of a mother and a daughter, Angee and Vincci. Angee has more than 30 years of textile and fashion manufacturing under her belt while Vincci brings in new elements and ideas into this project. By combining jewelry, feathers, and a good dose of fun, this mother and daughter duo aims to make accessories that will make girls and women look special on their special date. Both mother and daughter often joke about this project being their “early retirement scheme” pet project.”

Check out their blog for behind the scene stories, new finds and new designs at http://angeew.wordpress.com/.  You can also purchase a clutch similar to the one featured above at their Etsy store, found here.

GSS Featured Wedding :: Savanna & Aaron’s Country Chic Wedding :: MJ Photography

Happy Hump Day, Lovelies!!!  Today’s fabulous featured wedding comes from Mindy Cowart of MJ Photography, an East Texas based wedding photographer.   Mindy has been so sweet and accommodating to GSS and we have truly enjoyed working with her on this feature.

Savanna and Aaron were married on April 16, 2011 in a beautiful ceremony at the Stone Oak Ranch in Murchison, Texas.  Savanna was kind enough to answer a few questions for us:

How did you and Aaron meet? We met in high school after his family moved to my town.  My best friend and I “stalked” the “hot” new senior all of our freshman year. Close to the end of that school year we realized my little sister and his little sister had become best friends so we started prodding them for info about each other. But a year passed while he went off to college before we ran into each other in the local grocery store. And for the last five years we have been inseparable ever since. :)

How long have you been together? Almost five full years already!

How did Aaron propose? He planned a whole proposal but was so excited when he got the ring from the jeweler.  He had it specially made and took a few weeks to get it in.   The anticipation must have been killing him because he called me  on accident and before he knew what he was saying the words “I GOT YOUR RING IN!!!” popped out.  Confused I said “What ring??”   He responded with, “Ummmm NEVER MIND! Gotta go, I’ll see you later!”  But I kept questioning the odd phone call that afternoon so finally he pulled out a little red box and said “This ring” …

What sold you on your wedding venue? The venue fit out personalities perfectly, country for me and my family with style for him and his… We fell in love with it immediately and to avoid having to pay the higher cost of booking since the price change deadline was two days away from the day we toured it, we went home that night, discussed it and placed our deposit the very next day.

Your dress is gorgeous, where did you get it and how did you know it was “the one”? I had “the dress” designed in my mind before I ever tried one on.  My dress was actually only the third dress I tried on, but it was not what I was looking for.  However, thanks to the great staff at David’s Bridal, I was able to customize the neck line from a straight cut to a semi sweetheart, the back from a standard zip closure to a beautiful lace up, the flare from flat to a slight A-line with a trumpet petti skirt, and added the beautiful three-tier bustle where there was none before.

What was your “something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue”? Something old was my Great Grandmother’s ring, something new was everything,  something borrowed was my Grandmother’s bracelet and something blue were the boots I wore.

How did you choose your wedding color palette? I didn’t pick a particular “palette” instead I chose a “style.”  French country meets country chic is the best I can describe it…  A mix of floral prints, woods, soft lace, burlap and beautiful spring mix floral arrangements set the tone for our reception but we really just used the natural beauty of the venue for the ceremony.

Do you have any advice for bride and grooms that are in the planning process? Let/make him help, he’ll regret it if he doesn’t … Aaron didn’t do a lot but I forced him to help with the “silly” decisions like what type of filler flowers and what flavor icing to use on the cake… In the end he had something he could say he did and it made the day a little more special for us both.  And be sure that you don’t let it all get too overwhelming,  it will ruin the whole experience.

What song did you dance to for your first dance? We picked Brantley Gilbert’s “My Kind of Crazy”.

What was your favorite part of your big day? We loved everything about our special day!  But some memorable moments were when my Great Aunt talked the DJ into changing the song on our first dance half way through from “my kind of crazy” to “love shack” shocked both of us, but got a good laugh. Then one of my flower girls sang “Ring of Fire “by Johnny Cash to us and all our guests..  She was only four but knew every word. And of course the “I Do’s”, even though I got a case of the giggles about half way through … Not sure what had me so tickled but I really had to fight the urge to bust out laughing and that had the officiant a little tickled too.
