GSS Featured Wedding :: Kelsey & Bryan’s Rustic Fall Texas Wedding :: Ryan Price Photography

Happy Friday, Lovelies!!!  Today’s fabulous featured wedding was submitted to us by Ryan Price of  Ryan Price Photography, a Texas based wedding photographer.  Ryan has been so sweet and accommodating to GSS and we have truly enjoyed working with him on this feature.

Kelsey and Bryan were married on August 28, 2010 at Amber Springs  in Montgomery, Texas.  What a beautiful venue! Kelsey was kind enough to answer a few questions for us:

How long have you and Bryan been together?  We’ve been together for 4 and a half years.

What sold you on your wedding venue?   I wanted something outdoors and rustic but that had an indoor venue for the reception that could be used as a back up in case of bad weather.

Your dress is gorgeous, where did you get it and how did you know it was “the one”?  Honestly, this is a funny question. I hate shopping and especially trying on clothes. As excited as I was to get married, finding a wedding dress still fit into that shopping/trying on clothes category. We had 3 dress appointments one day to look at dresses. The one I picked was at the first store, and it was maybe the third dress I tried on. I knew it was “the one” cause it had pockets, everyone loved it, it was reasonably priced, and I didn’t want to shop anymore. I canceled the other appointments and stopped looking. Done & done!   Haha!

What was your “something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue”?  One of my bridesmaids gave me a bracelet on the wedding day that was blue, I borrowed another one of my bridesmaid’s rings that was borrowed and old, and then everything else I had was new.

How did you choose your wedding color palette?  My favorite colors are shades of blue and I wanted summer colors… I didn’t really stick to one color palette.  I just went with whatever I liked and looked good.

What song did you dance to for your first dance?   Everything” by Michael Buble.

Do you have any advice for brides that are in the planning process?  Everything can get done… even at the last minute. I waited until about 3 weeks before to do cakes, flowers & many other little tasks… more expensive doesn’t always mean better. The best thing I did was completely stop stressing and worrying about anything a few days before. What’s done is done and what’s not isn’t but you might as well enjoy yourself.

What was your favorite part of your big day?  Oh gosh, I don’t have any complaints at all… the whole thing was my favorite. There were a few things that I was really pleasantly surprised by… my DJ went over and beyond his normal DJ duties, making sure the wedding party and my family always had a drink or food if they wanted it. He made sure Bryan and I sat down and ate something. If he hadn’t gone and made us a plate, I would have never eaten my own food! The wedding planner just made everything so easy and laid back for my family and I.

GSS’s Things We LOVE :: La Plume Ethere :: Vintage Inspired Feather Accessories

Our good friend, Kate Miller, of Kate Takes Photos clued us in on the pure genius of La Plume Ethere.  La Plume Ethere makes absolutely gorgeous vintage inspired feather accessories.  Oh, and if you purchase one of La Plume Ethere’s fabulous feather accessories, 10% of the proceeds go to the American Cancer Society!  So not only will you be getting some stunning accessories for your wedding, but you will also be donating to charity!!  Now, you really HAVE to check them out!

Here’s a little bit about La Plume Ethere via their Etsy shop:

“I began creating feather accessories under my first shop (The Surreptitious Sloth on Etsy, http://surreptitioussloth.etsy.com) in January of 2009. Inspiration is drawn from vintage fashion; whether it be the era of Old Hollywood, Flappers, or Victorian style, La Plume Ethere seeks to create unique, one of a kind pieces that add unique flair to any special event.

La Plume Ethere raised and donated $1200 for the American Cancer Society in 2010!

La Plume Ethere donates 10% of all sales to The American Cancer Society. When I began creating and selling items, I did so around the holiday season of 2009. This was my first holiday season after having lost my mother to lung cancer.

To keep myself busy during this time, I began crafting. My mom was an avid crafter. She hand made every halloween costume and taught me to sew. She created hundreds of Christmas ornaments (which the first year without her our new kitten attacked…). And, every single doorway was adorned with some form of decorative wreath hand crafted by my mom. So, what else was there to do while trying to remember her positively but craft!

I soon discovered what I loved to do best was to work with feathers. Their texture–so soft and fluffy–if so much fun to work with. What I loved even more, as I soon found out, was working with brides and creating something special for their wedding. Each bouquet, fascinator, boutonniere, or other La Plume Ethere creation ends up a part of a very special time in someone’s life.

My shop has allowed me to do something I love and remember someone I love. Creating unique one of a kind pieces that help to make someone’s special day even more special and fund raising for cancer research have both given me.”

And now for their beautiful eye candy!

GSS Featured Wedding :: Courtney & Justin’s Intimate St. Simon’s Island Wedding :: Donna Von Bruening Photography

Today’s fabulous featured wedding comes from Donna of Donna Von Bruening Photography, a Savannah, Georgia based wedding photographer.  We have featured Donna’s fabulous work previously- Remember Abby & Derek’s Beautiful Savannah Wedding?  Also, Donna has come on board as one of our featured vendors and sponsors!  So please join us in giving Donna a BIG warm welcome to GSS!  Donna has been so sweet and accommodating to GSS and we have truly enjoyed working with her on this feature.

Courtney and Justin were married on November 27, 2010 at Villa de Suenos, St. Simons Island, Georgia.  Courtney was kind enough to answer a few questions for us:

How did you and Justin meet?   Justin and I met at the Trustees Theatrein Savannah while working backstage on a production of “Singin in the Rain.”  I was doing costumes, and he was part of the tech crew.  We had be noticing each other for the entire run of the show, but didn’t talk until the last show during the final song “You were meant for me.”  When he spoke to me, there was a genuine tone in his voice that I had never heard before.  I could tell this was going to be special.  When I went back to the makeup/costume room to write down my phone number for him, I couldn’t find a pen or proper piece of paper ANYWHERE!  I ended up having to use a scrap of an ATM receipt and eyeliner.  About a year ago, Justin showed me that he had preserved that scrap of paper for 7 years in a ziploc bag.  Too sweet :)

How long have you been together?   I always say that you have to use the quadratic equation to come up with the actual amount of time we’ve been together!!  It’s a little complicated, but we have known each other for 8 years.  I was 19 when we met, and both of us had some growing up to do.  We had an innocent, little 4 month romance, and then didn’t see each other again for about a year and a half.  We started spending time together again, but I insisted that we remain just friends.  For about 6 months, he played along, and was just my friend.  I cherish that time so much.  What a beautiful foundation of friendship we built for our second, and real romance.  We graduated 2 years later, and parted ways again for about 6 months.  We reunited and have been together since.  I’m grateful for the path we took.  Justin is a good man, and truly believes in marriage.  He was worth the wait!

How did Justin propose?  It was very simple.  We went for a walk, and he stopped to read a quote from Shakespeare that is engraved on a wall of the Trustee’s Theatre.  After that he got on his knee, and just spoke from his heart for about 5 minutes.  It was an incredibly earnest and humble moment.

What sold you on your wedding venue?   The Villa was breathtaking and had so much character.  When I saw it, I was instantly inspired.  Justin grew up in Miami, so the Spanish style of the house was very nostalgic for him.  I, on the other hand, had a vision of a family centered, spiritual, and intimate wedding.  A home was the perfect place to accomplish that vision.  The entire wedding was planned in 8 weeks. The Villa just happened to be available the week of Thanksgiving.  It was perfect!  We celebrated Thanksgiving there together, Friday we enjoyed the beach and watched some football, and Saturday we had the wedding.  We only had about 50 people, mostly family and a few close friends.  The ceremony, dinner, and merriment all took place at the Villa.

Your dress is gorgeous, where did you get it and how did you know it was “the one”?  I’m the manager of BleuBelle Bridal in Savannah, so, of course I got my dress there. :)   While I had helped so many girls find “the one,” the idea of doing it myself was a bit intimidating.  For me finding “the one” (the dress) is like when you find you “the one”  (your mate)…. I just didn’t feel the need to look anymore.  It made me feel beautiful, and I felt like me in it.

What song did you dance to for your first dance?  We had 2 first dances.  The first was James Brown “This is a Man’s World,” and the second was a recreation of the twist that Uma Thurman and John Travolta do in “Pulp Fiction.”

What was your “something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue”?

Something old:  my Grandmother’s wedding band.
Something new:  my gown
Something borrowed: my Mom’s 30th anniversary diamond earrings
Something Blue:  a blue monogram with the wedding date stitched inside my dress
I also had a six pence for my shoe.  Not many people do that anymore, but I had the six pence that my Mom wore in her shoe for her wedding.
“Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue, and a six pence for her shoe.”

How did you choose your wedding color palette?  I love neutrals.  I’ve never been into bright colors.  It was a November wedding and the last thing I wanted to do was typical fall colors.  So I went with my gut and stayed with neutrals.   There was no specific moment where I was like “my colors are going to be navy, gray, and white.”  It just kinda happened.  I wanted it all to blend, but I didn’t want it to look contrived.  So I ended up with monochromatic blues, Navy being the predominant shade of blue, gray, white, and a few green accents.

Do you have any advice for brides that are in the planning process?

Be creative.  Be reasonable. Break some rules.

Stick to what you like.  If you’ve never liked the color “papaya” before, don’t use it for your wedding just because you saw a pretty magazine wedding with that color.  Represent YOUR personal style, because you’ll be looking at the photos for a long time.  Even beyond your “papaya” phase…

Only bring a few people that support you, love you, and respect you to your bridal gown appointment.  Too many opinions can cause unnecessary stress and even tears.

Lastly, don’t let ANYTHING steal your joy on your wedding day.  Something, be it big or small, will go wrong.  DO NOT let it steal your joy.

What was your favorite part of your big day?  The ceremony and the exchange of vows.  Spiritually entering into the covenant of marriage is a supernatural event.  Nothing can compare to the profound nature of that life-long commitment.

Vendors:

Venue: Villa de Suenos, St. Simons Island, GA

Dress:  Romona Keveza

Cake:  Rice Krispie treat cake.  I made it myself the night before the wedding with a few helpers!  Justin and I aren’t big on desserts, but we both LOVE Rice Krispie Treats!  Everybody loved it!  We also had seasonal pies… pumpkin, pecan, apple.  They were a huge hit!  And it was an inexpensive alternative to the traditional fondant cake.

Floral:  Christopher Confero

Linens:  Kate Watson, Beachview Tent Rentals

Catering:  Private Chef:  Colin Knox

DJ/Band:  DJ Terry Thurston (he’s a longtime friend of ours)

Videographer:  Justin has a film degree and films weddings on a regular basis, so he set up the tri-pod and his professional HD Camera, and hit record :)

Invitations/Wedding Stationery:  I designed and printed them myself.  Art school finally paid off :)

Event Planner: Caroline Coleman of “The Kitchen Witches” catering, and owner of BleuBelle Bridal, Heather Burge, executed the logistics of the day.

Event Designer:  Christopher Confero

GSS Wedding Inspiration Board :: Red & Yellow

We love how bright and rich the wedding color palette of Yellow and Red is.  This palette is extremely versatile as it could be used any time of the year.  You could use darker, more muted shades of Yellow and Red as an autumnal color palette.  OR by brightening up the hues of Yellow and Red, (like we did below!) this palette would make a phenomenal Spring or Summer wedding color palette!  Also, if you’re going for a Spring/Summer wedding, you could use all kinds of fresh fruit in your palette and decor… Think fresh strawberries, red apples, cherries, and lemons!

GSS Guest Blogger :: Sweet Pea Events :: Thank You Card Ettique

We have the utmost privilege of having Sweet Pea Events as a guest blogger for Groom Sold Separately today!  We are so excited and beyond thrilled to have Sweet Pea Events lend their expertise and experience with us!

So, without further ado…. Ladies and Gentlemen, we give you Sweet Pea Events!

One of our most frequently asked questions by our clients is, “What is the etiquette for sending thank you notes?”…and an even more popular question is “When should I send thank you notes for gifts received before the wedding – do I send upon receiving the gift or wait until after the wedding?” Whether you’re now a Mrs. and are enjoying your leftover cake and new gifts – OR – you are a bride-to-be and are anticipating the UPS man arriving with Crate and Barrel boxes every week, this post is for you!

First off, it is a complete myth that you have an entire year to send out your thank you notes. All thank you notes should be written within three months from when you received the gift. This being said, for all gifts received prior to your wedding, by all means send the giver of your gift a thank you note upon receipt. We all know how crazy life can get and that may be a little harder to do than it is said, so instead you should make goals for yourself and try to write 5 thank you notes a week until you are completely finished. Your thank you notes are important and it’s better if you send them later rather than not at all.

Also, even if you didn’t receive an actual wrapped present from someone, that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t receive a thank you note. There a lot of people involved in the planning and the actual big day who should receive special thanks for all of their help and dedication to you and your new family.

Here’s a quick list of people to consider thanking:

· People who have given you a wedding, engagement, or shower gift should receive a card. If you have received a gift from a group, each individual should be written their own card.

· Make sure that you don’t forget to thank your bridal party; they have spent a lot of time, effort, and often a financial investment participating in your big day and being by your side.

· Vendors – even though you have paid them for their services, an extra thank you is always a nice way to tell them how much you appreciated them (especially if they go above and beyond!) A small thank you goes a long way!

· Anyone who has thrown you an engagement party, bachelorette party, or bridal shower definitely deserves thanks. These notes should be written within a week of the event to show your gratitude.

· Don’t forget your parents! They have likely spent a lot of time, energy, and money to make your big day special. No matter their involvement or investment, just a small thank you will make their day. Of course, if you’d like to also present them with a parent gift as well (framed picture of you and your new hubby or a parent album from your wedding) they will be elated!

· Friends and family who hosted your out of town guests while you were busy taking care of last minute details.

GSS Featured Wedding :: Lesli & Clifton’s Knoxville Wedding :: Shannon Kelly Photography

You’re in for a treat today!  Today we have a fabulous submission from Shannon of  Shannon Kelley Photography.  Shannon Kelley Photography is one of our preferred vendors and sponsors of GSS!  So please join us in giving Shannon a great BIG warm welcome to GSS!!!  Shannon Kelley Photography is based out of Knoxville, Tennessee.  Shannon has been so sweet and accommodating to GSS and we have truly enjoyed working with her on this feature.

We are in love with the southern charm and class of this wedding!  This wedding is such breath of fresh air since we are all longing for spring/summer!

Lesli and Clifton were married on June 26, 2010 at the Cherokee Country Club on the Tennessee River in Knoxville.  What a GORGEOUS location with breath taking views of the Smokey Mountains!

Lesli was kind enough to answer a few questions for us:

How did you and Clifton meet?  We met through mutual friends one summer.

How long have you been together?  We had been together approximately 4 years before getting married.

How did Clifton propose?  Clifton proposed at Rosemary Beach…a total surprise on a family vacation!  The funny thing is that on the night of the proposal, Clifton had asked if we could go walk on the beach after dinner. I didn’t really think anything about it but as we started walking, he was acting totally awkward and kept his hands in his pocket. I was totally joking around and was asking him why he was acting funny, what he was doing, and even said, ”you’re not going to propose to me or anything”? Oh sure enough, that’s totally what he was doing!  I felt so bad that I had ruined the moment that I totally started crying!

What sold you on your wedding venue?  Cherokee Country Club offered everything we wanted in a venue and more. I had wanted an outdoor wedding without being committed to staying outdoors all evening.  The club had an excellent terrace that has wonderful river views but has the amenities to host an indoor reception.  That was greatly appreciated by all of our guests considering the immense heat for a 6:30 wedding in June! Plus, the ballroom is has a great neutral pallet that can coordinate with many different colors.

Your dress is gorgeous, where did you get it and how did you know it was “the one”? On a shopping trip with my friends, we went into The Bride Room in Nashville, TN. The dress was featured and was recommended by the owner.  She noted that it was one of her favorites and that I should try it on.  It was completely what I was looking for…simple yet still classy.  I loved it but just couldn’t commit the first day. I finally went back with family and got their approval.

What was your “something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue”?  My something old was my mother’s garter, borrowed was my maid of honor’s hankie and blue, well you know, come to think of it I didn’t have anything blue!

How did you choose your wedding color palette?  I am obsessed with all things apple green and knew that had to be one of the colors.  The purple was later added when we met with our florist.

What song did you dance to for your first dance?  Our first dance was to “Your Song” from Elton John.  I love the simplicity of that song and it always reminds me of the duet from Moulin Rouge, the movie.

Do you have any advice for brides that are in the planning process?  My only advice is to be true to yourself and your fiance…at the end of the day, it is really about the two of you.

What was your favorite part of your big day?  That is so hard to answer because there were so many great moments.  I really enjoyed seeing Clifton before we walked down the aisle. It was such a calming moment. The bridesmaids and I had a great time getting ready beforehand.  My grandmother and I had a great dance to one of our favorite songs.  The whole day was just really great and went by far to fast!
