GSS Things we LOVE :: Wedding Flower Petal Aisle Runner Design

image courtesy of Kristen Weaver Photography

Not all wedding aisles are created equally. Who says you can jazz up your wedding aisle runner with something fun, something unique, something that screams YOU? We found a few great ideas and wanted to share them with you. The first are creating a masterpieces with flower petals. Make your mark with pretty designs by grouping the petals in a design. You can lay them directly on the ground or a plain aisle runner you already have.

Adding large hurricanes with floating candles and more flower petals really transforms the aisle above to something romantic and whimsical. It looks like something right out of a romance novel! The top right image is truly magical as well. That aisle is weighted near the guests with what looks like terra cotta and is much wider. If you have room to do this, it will certainly be a GRAND entrance by the Bride! Most florists will have stock left over and some grocery stores will have to discard flowers that they were unable to sell before their time was up. You can try to gather petals near the day of the wedding this way, or you florist can find the perfect ones for your wedding. Rose petals will brighten the aisle and add a fragrant touch. If your colors are more muted, maybe try an even more fragrant flower like lavender. These blooms will help calm your guests and add a wonderful aroma to the ceremony. Remember, its your wedding and have fun with it.

What a lovely day. Genevieve and Stephen were married on Memorial Day weekend. Edward and I were struck by the joy this couple felt on their wedding day – from the very start to finish. Genevieve and Stephen were completely relaxed and couldn’t have enjoyed each other or their friends and family more.

We love the bright colors and the joy that is so evident throughout the day. Please enjoy this beautiful wedding!

GSS Featured Wedding :: Amber & Brad’s Country Chic Wedding :: Miranda Marrs Photography

Happy Hump Day, Lovelies!!!  Today’s fabulous featured wedding comes from Miranda of Miranda Marrs Photography, a Gainesville, Texas based wedding photographer.   She has been so sweet and very accommodating to GSS on this feature. Thank you! This wedding is very special to GSS, as Tamra is good friends with the bride and her sister!

Brad and Amber were married in McKinney, Texas on May 21, 2011.  Amber was kind enough to answer a few questions for us:

How did you and  Brad meet? Brad and I had mutual friends in college, and one night he came in to the restaurant where I worked and I was their waitress. He asked for my number and the rest is history.

How long have you been together? We have been together a little over 4 years.

How did Brad propose? Brad wrote “Will you marry me” in the steam on the bathroom mirror. Ha!

What sold you on your wedding venue? We searched forever for a little white chapel that had a reception hall and outdoor area all in one space and when we found Chestnut Square it was a perfect fit.

Your dress is gorgeous, where did you get it and how did you know it was “the one”? It’s made by Allure Bridals.  I found it at Mii’s Bridal in Dallas, TX and as soon as I put it on I knew I loved it from the shape to the lace it had everything I had been looking for.

What was your “something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue”? My something old was my grandmother’s hankie, My something new was my dress and shoes, my something borrowed was the garter my mom and sister wore at their weddings, and my something blue was my headpiece and earrings.

How did you choose your wedding color palette? I had the hardest time sticking to a color pallette. I finally fell in love with shades of blue and brown when Brad bought his boots for the wedding which were chocolate brown with blue stitching.

Side Note:  Amber chose the beautiful wedding color palette of Chocolate Brown and Cornflower Blue.  For more wedding inspiration using these colors, click  here!

What song did you dance to for your first dance?  “Just By Being You” by Steel Magnolia.

Do you have any advice for brides that are in the planning process? Remember it is YOUR day. We had a hard time trying to please everyone and I worried about everyone one else with every decision.  Finally, Brad reminded me that it was OUR day and we were the ones that would replay the moments millions of times in our heads so we did what we wanted and could not be happier.

What was your favorite part of your big day? It is really hard to just think of one thing but I am so glad we did a “First Look.” That time where Brad and I had a few moments alone to see each other was perfect part of a hectic afternoon and to have those pictures is great.

GSS Tips from a Wedding Expert :: Buying Nationally Grown Flowers

We all know that flowers can be flown in from all over the world, no problem.  I thought, since we are all trying to be socially conscious, what would be the best flower to get that is grown local, within the Continental US?  That would of course be, hydrangeas.  The varieties that come easily, all year round would be green, ivory, pale blue and pale pink. Designing your wedding around these magnificent, “best bang for your buck” flowers is a no-brainer. Not having to worry about flooding in South America is a huge relief to me, as well as our brides.  Roses and many other flowers are also grown in California, as well as tulips in Seattle, peonies in Oregon, Orchids and most tropical plants come to us from Hawaii.

Supporting our national growers is a huge plus for our economy.  Here is a little tidbit I found online:

Freshroses.com : a family business has been growing flowers in California for 36 years.  “If we do not grow it, we buy from local growers”.  Why should you buy American Grown Flowers you may ask? Well here are just a few great reasons. Domestic flower growers have been declimated competing with South American product that is often government subsidized. Ironically as US citizens become more conscious of environmental issues, the majority of flowers entering the United States are coming from countries with no holds barred environmental laws. Recent reports show Ecuadorian roses entering the US with pesticide residues of chemicals banned in the US. Also reports of pesticide poisoning of the employees is unsettling with up to 60% of the employees showing signs of pesticide poisoning. Chemicals banned long ago in the US as deadly are still being used in foreign fields, and reintroduced to your nose via imported flowers .

Another little known fact…our wholesaler also grows several varieties of Zinnias, Celosia and sunflowers, all here, locally, in Dallas!  Take a trip to your local wholesaler with your floral provider so that you can get a better understanding of “how it works”.

Spring is on the way before you know it, so take advantage of other floral that is seasonally available.  For instance:

January :: Most all flowers available (anemones, roses, tulips, lilies, hydrangeas, stock, gerberas, etc)
February :: Most flowers available (2nd most expensive time of year to buy flowers)
March :: Blooming branches!!!  Forsythia, Cherry Blossoms, Apple, Pear, ONLY AVAILABLE IN SPRING!
April :: Dogwood Branches short time only!!
May :: All flowers available (most expensive time of year for flowers)
June :: Most flower varieties start to decrease (here is when you will see mostly roses, lilies, hydrangeas (white, green , pale pink and pale blue only)
July :: Most flower varieties still decreased
August :: Most flower varieties still decreased (Great “hot season” flower – DAHLIAS!)
September :: Still too hot for pick up in varieties, Hydrangeas begin coming in in darker greens with burgundy tips, think FALL)
October :: As it cools off we start picking up different seasonal flowers, like some tulips and other fall flowers, Celosia,
November :: Anything available except seasonal blooming branches
December :: Anything available except seasonal blooming branches

Not all colors of flowers are always available, just as flowers have a season, the color of some flowers do as well. So, taking advantage of what is readily available in the US will help you designing your wedding.  Do not forget to do your due diligence in researching what is available, but hold your floral provider accountable for knowing what is available, and when!  Let’s all make our carbon footprint a little smaller in the coming years.

GSS Wedding Hair Trends :: Hair’s to You Brides!!

We can’t get away from running a wedding website with gobs of useful wedding information without posting on the topic of hair. Its part of the getting ready process. Most brides have it. It might be short, long, medium, blonde, brown, auburn, pink, thick, thin, straight or curly. Whatever types of locks you have, we want to help you to find the right style for YOU on your wedding day? We find that celebrities play a role in the trending hair styles and we are seeing more and more messy up-do’s on the brides. If you don’t look like you slept on your hair overnight, you still aren’t ready. We are also seeing a lot of side-swept low ponytails. Still very delicate and dainty. Modern brides are keeping the sleek modern look by pulling all of it back and adding volume to the crown of the head. Brides with shorter wavy locks are keeping it simple and adding fun accessories to give that sweet bride feeling to their hair. Another wedding or any day hair trend we are seeing is braids….and lots of them. Fishtail braids, french braids, messy braids…they are everywhere. The internet is full of tutorials how to create these do’s on your own or look to our wedding vendor directories to find a beauty guru near you!

We looked to pinterest to find what the people are pinning for “wedding hair“. We loved what we saw. Here are just a few we wanted to share with you for your wedding hair inspiration.

GSS Featured Wedding :: Gina & Lawrence’s Elegant Chicago Wedding :: David Wittig Photography

Happy Hump Day, Lovelies!!!  Today’s featured wedding comes from Nancy of David Wittig Photography. They are a Chicago, Illinois based wedding photographer.  Nancy has been so accommodating to GSS on this feature.  Thank you!  Gina and Lawrence were married in Chicago, Illinois on April 30, 2011.  Gina was kind enough to answer a few questions for us:

How did you and  Lawrence meet?  We met as undergrads at the University of Chicago

How long have you been together?  10 years!

How did Lawrence propose?  We had planned a weekend getaway for Labor Day, but I had to cancel at the last minute because of work demands.  We rescheduled for the following weekend and I thought nothing of it.   I didn’t know it then, but Larry had been planning to propose on that trip.  He just couldn’t bear to wait another week though, so as we were lounging at home on the couch, Larry left the room for a minute, came back, kneeled down next to me, thought for a second, and said, “Oh, I’m just gonna do it!”  He pulled the ring from his pocket and asked me to marry him.  He later explained that he “just couldn’t keep a secret from his best friend.”

What sold you on your wedding venue?  Our ceremony venue, Rockefeller Memorial Chapel at the University of Chicago, holds a lot of meaning for us because we share a lot of memories together on campus.  I always imagined getting married in a big, beautiful church, so it really fit the bill!  Our reception venue, Hotel 71, had amazing views of the city because of its floor-to-ceiling windows.  It had also starred as Bruce Wayne’s penthouse in one of the recent Batman movies!  The catering sales manager there, Rebecca, was an absolute dream to work with, and we could not have been happier with the five-star service.

Your dress is gorgeous, where did you get it and how did you know it was “the one”?  My dress is from Priscilla of Boston.  I actually never really thought of it as “the one” because I had such a difficult time picking it out!  Everyone thinks that dress shopping is the best part about planning, but it was really the most stressful part for me.

What was your “something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue”?  ”Old” was a necklace Lawrence had given me many years ago; “new” was the dress, veil, earrings, and shoes; “blue” was a garter my mom gave me that morning; and now that I think about it, I didn’t have anything “borrowed” – oops!

How did you choose your wedding color palette?  Pink is one of our favorite colors, and I love how romantic and elegant the blush tone looks with white, ivory, silver and grey.

Do you have any advice for brides that are in the planning process?  As long as you’re organized and check off one task at a time, it will get done!  Seriously consider working with a day-of coordinator, especially if your wedding is logistically complicated (multiple venues and the like); otherwise, you’ll be too worried about making sure the day goes smoothly to actually enjoy it.  Most importantly, try to remember how blessed you are to have found someone who loves you and to be able to throw yourself a party to celebrate that!

What song did you dance to for your first dance?  ”More” by Bobby Darin.

What was your favorite part of your big day?  Every part was our favorite part!  We never expected to get so caught up in the joyfulness and excitement of the day and to feel more in love than ever.  We loved spending the day surrounded by our family and friends and we couldn’t have been happier with how everything turned out.  The part I will probably never forget is keeping my eyes focused on Lawrence during the ceremony so my tears wouldn’t spill over, and feeling so happy and reassured in those moments.  The quieter moments we shared while just the two of us were walking around the city taking pictures were also very special.

Vendors:

Venue:  Ceremony – Rockefeller Memorial Chapel;  Reception – Hotel 71

Dress:  Priscilla of Boston, Oakbrook Terrace, IL

Thank you so much, Nancy, for sharing this amazing wedding with us!  Please stop by David Wittig Photography’s website and blog and show them some love!  And thank you, Gina, for taking your time to answer our questions!  We wish you and Lawrence a lifetime full of love, laughter, and happiness!!!  May every day be better than the last!

GSS DIY Tutorial :: How to Create a Perfect Paper Bouquet

We always like to reuse, repurpose, and create extraordinary things from ordinary materials for fantastic weddings! Today we are bringing you a fun how-to we saw at Elizabeth Anne Designs. We found a great post at RocknRoll Bride with a real wedding using these paper flowers shot by Katherine O’Brien Photography too! You can find many sellers on Etsy if you are not feeling crafty enough to make your own for your wedding. We wanted to see just how “easy” it was to create these paper masterpieces and found a great tutorial posted online. You can see how to create your own wedding paper flower bouquet from part1 and part2.

We sat down with a good book and started ripping out the pages. Our book of choice was a Physics book from 1936. The pages were worn and have antiquing already, so the look we wanted is achieved without having to do anything to the paper. We used a simple paper cutter with measurement lines on it. This helped to create the exact square pieces you need to fold each flower. We used simple Elmer’s school glue to glue them together. Each flower took about 5 minutes to complete once we got the hang of it. This is a great craft if you wanted to do it while watching your favorite television show or having a girls night with your bridesmaids at home. You can even get the fiance to help in the paper transformation process. The older paper is very soft and delicate, so be careful if you are using an older book you found at a thrift store, antique store, or from your Grandparent’s bookshelf. Once we started to fold the paper it wanted to separate. Stay tuned as we try to create a beautiful bouquet with these flowers. We will do our best to create a fun bouquet that you too can recreate.
