GSS Tips from a Wedding Planner: Fun with Vinyl Decals!

For a fun and unique way to add personalization to your wedding, consider having your wedding logo made into a vinyl decal! These decals are colorful, affordable, and leave no damaging residue. Basic, small decals can be found online through various decal shops, but for larger decals – such as ones you would use on a dance floor on going down your ceremony aisle – contact a local event design/decor company. From chairs, to windows, to dance floors, vinyl can really put an interesting twist on your wedding decor!

GSS Tips From a Wedding Expert :: Lights, Camera, Action!

Part of putting on the best show of your life is using all of these elements.   A very big part of planning your wedding will be finding the best photographer to capture and document your wedding day.  Perfect lighting is what the photographer will be looking for among many other aspects to capture this lifetime event.  Help your photographer out by taking serious consideration when it comes to illuminating your wedding.

Where will your reception take place?  Ceiling height is the first places my eyes go when I walk into a ballroom, then chandeliers, then windows, then tables, then floor.  I think that this is the way most of our brains work when we are absorbing space with our eyes.

Candles are great and create ambient lighting for a warm, romantic feel.  These can only be considered as accents though.  Candlelight alone makes for beautiful silhouettes, but does not provide enough light to see an arrangement of dark reds, magenta, or other beautiful jewel-toned floral.  Choosing a dark palette of floral without adding special lighting is heart breaking to me.

So, my mission is to give good advice and encourage all couples to evaluate their venue and color choices carefully.  This will ensure that your pictures will be exactly what you remember.  Pictures so vivid, you will still taste the food, smell the flowers and hear the laughter.

Pin spot lighting is a focused beam of light that is projected onto the floral or decor so they can be seen after the lights go down for party time! This is an additional cost per table, but it can turn any wedding into a platinum affair.

To back me up on this point, I asked a few Dallas Texas wedding photographers a simple question, and this is what they have to say:

“That all depends on how dark the room is.  If there is absolutely no ambient light then pin lighting is crucial.  In some venues where there is a good amount of ambient light it can actually hurt the photographs because we have two separate light sources that we are trying to expose for and both are completely out of our control.  In most cases the pin lighting is much brighter than the ambient light which means that if we tried to expose for the ambient light we would not pick up the detail in the flowers where the light is brightest.   There are ways around pin lighting I try to shot it from behind so I’ll go to the opposite side of the pin lighting and use it as a backlight still able to pick up the ambient lighting in the room.” Jennifer

“Any additional lighting (up lighting/spot/pin) gives the images depth and makes them more interesting, especially in a bland ball room.” Lynn

“Spot lighting on centerpieces in dark rooms is so incredibly important to us as photographers. Lighting gives such a beautiful dimension to flowers and decor that we think it’s almost NECESSARY unless the venue is well lit. (most are not) You’ve spent all of this money on amazing decor and you want it to shine in person as well as in the photos… which is all you will have after the wedding is done and over. ” Tanya

“Pin spots are extremely important for centerpieces in a reception; they draw your attention away from distracting walls and ceilings and spotlight the details on your tables.  This is a wonderful way to light a room.  Add in some accent up lights along the walls and columns and you have a beautiful scene for your guests to enjoy.  Your photographer will love you because it makes for a very beautiful photo! “ Jonathan

Other ways to get around the additional lighting is to choose a lighter palette, enhanced with candle light.  One of my favorite suggestions is to go all white on your floral decorations and add accent up lighting or wall washes to bring your colors to the reception!  Keep in mind, always design your wedding to compliment the colors in your venue and you won’t go wrong!

GSS Encore Presentation :: Melissa McFadden :: Bill & Michelle’s Wine Country Wedding

This California wedding has received a huge response from Stumble readers and we are thrilled to bring you an encore presentation of it….

Melissa McFadden sent us this gorgeous wedding via Two Bright Lights (Hooray!) and we love it! There is so much to love about it. Melissa shares a little with us about the bride and groom and their wedding, “Bill and Michelle live in a big city but opted to get married in the small wine community of Walla Walla. (Michelle’s family currently lives in Walla Walla where they run Ensemble Cellars.) Their wedding combined the elegance and details of a larger city wedding with the small-town feel of Walla Walla. The ceremony was held in their family church and the reception took place in the backyard at their family home (with portions built in 1865, it’s on Walla Walla’s national historic register). Flush with details like Appletini’s served from Mason jars, wine from the family winery, gourmet food for the adults, pizza for the kids, sparklers, glow sticks and a candy bar — the wedding was absolutely wonderful!”

We also were able to ask Michelle a few questions to get her take on the wedding. Thank you both for being so accommodating. It has been an absolute pleasure working with you on this feature! Without further delay….take it away, Michelle….

How did you and Bill (husband) meet?
We met in Walla Walla after I graduated from College. I was looking for a short-term job before I took my permanent job in San Francisco. I went up to get a job at the Vet’s the local Muni course and Bill was working up there. We worked together for a few months before we ever dated. I moved down to San Francisco and he drove the 11 hours every other weekend to see me. After 8 months of driving and a lot of miles on his car we both decided to more to Seattle so we could be together.

How long have you been together?
Bill and I have been together for a little over 6 years before we got married.

How did Bill propose?
Jan. 30th Amazing! It was a private “concert” Bill played the piano, his cousin played the guitar and my dad played a song on the violin. He decorated the church where we would later get married with candles and twinkle lights. The night was filled with a movie “snippets of our photos and my favorite movies” and he played 4 times between the video. We followed it up with a champagne toast.

What sold you on having your wedding at Walla Walla?
Bill and I met in Walla Walla and it’s a beautiful place to have a wedding. We planned a golf day and a wine tour on top of our wedding so that guest would make the 4 hour trek from Seattle and Portland. The wineries are a wonderful place to visit and having a wedding at home was just what I wanted. (Ok reception at home)

Your dress is gorgeous, where did you get it and how did you know it was “the one”?
I found the dress in an upscale bridal store in Portland…. (forgive me I don’t remember the name I have had the dress for 7 years… another story all to it self :) ) it’s a simple Amsale gown that I fell in love with the moment I put it on!

How did you choose your wedding color palette?
Purple was for the grapes in the vineyard, green was for the grass (my husband was a golf pro for 18 years, now in finance) and the linen the men wore keep the look cool and casual.

What song did you dance to for your first dance as husband and wife?
We took dance lessons at Arthur Murray and learned to Salsa so I changed dresses to a BCBG so everyone could see our moves. We choose By Your Side by Sade.

What was your “something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue”?
My something borrowed/old was my mothers veil, my something blue was the “I and Do” gems on the bottom of my shoes, and my something new was the earrings I wore made from a local jewelry maker in Kirkland.

Do you have any advice for brides that are in the planning process?
Don’t stress about the details, you can’t let the little things get to you the day goes by too fast to worry about one little thing. Take time to thank you guests for coming your night will fly and I hated that I couldn’t talk to each guest. Also spend time with your new groom; it was the best thing we did to take the time to see each other. It’s silly but you are so busy.

What was your favorite part of your big day?

So many pieces but we actually broke all the traditional rules and spend the night before the wedding together at a B&B (Abeja winery) and in the morning we got up relaxed and ate the amazing breakfast they provided outside so we had time together on “our” big day. Best thing we did!

We love the get-away car! Tell us more about that :

We had two, we borrow a friend and her old car and she drove us from the church to the reception site (it was wonderful and only stalled three times :) ) and when we left our reception we borrowed a golf cart because Bill was a golf pro for so long it was only fitting that we left in a golf cart!

Thank you so much Melissa for sending us this submission via Two Bright Lights for your super speedy responses and sharing such an amazing wedding with us! Please stop by her blog and show her some love! And thank you, Michelle, for taking the time to answer our questions! We wish you and Bill a lifetime full of love, laughter, and happiness!!! May every day be better than the last!

GSS Wedding :: Tamara & Mike’s Dallas Wedding :: Sara & Rocky Photography

You are in for a real treat today. We are bringing you some gorgeous Dallas wedding photography from Sara and Rocky Photography sent to us via Two Bright Lights. They are a husband and wife duo based out of Dallas Texas and bring a fun original approach to shooting weddings. We are happy to have these two awesome photographers! Because we know how much our readers like seeing the wedding and reading all about how the wedding was brought together, we asked Tamara a few questions….take it away, Tamara!

How did you and your husband meet?

We met at Sky Ranch Camps where we both work full-time. He had been working at our Oklahoma camp and transferred down to our Texas camp in December of 2009. It was almost immediately that we became interested in one another. could barely handle those big blue eyes.

How long have you been together?

He asked me on our first date on April 13, 2010, we got engaged on October 28, 2010 and were married on February 12, 2011. It all happened in 10 months, but we just knew it was right! And pre-dating, we eyed one another for quite a while :)

How did he propose?

The proposal was perfect – it was low key and it was the day that we could start planning for the rest of our lives together!  Mike picked me up late one night after Bible study and took me to our favorite spot – my old cul-de-sac where we spent our summer nights talking, dancing, looking at the gorgeous East Texas stars, and falling in love. I was wearing a baggy A&M sweatshirt, slippers, and my hair was in a messy pony tail – definitely not the most picturesque moment. We took a walk and ended up in the cul-de-sac that was lined in candles, the whole street was glowing. I knew what was happening, but tried to keep my cool even though my heart was about to burst! We danced for a few minutes and from there he proceeded to bath me in undeserved compliments and got down on one knee to ask me to spend the rest of my life with him! I said yes and we celebrated God for what He was doing.

What sold you on your wedding venue?

It was a combination of things that sold us. Because our engagement was short, our options immediately were limited. I loved the empty palette at Off The Grid because it already has a unique feel, but it also allowed you to run with your own style. It also worked out well for us because we wanted to have the ceremony and reception at the same place

We also love the vintage touches throughout the centerpieces and the curtain….tell us more!

Mike (my now husband) made fun of me throughout the whole engagement process because I threw the word ‘vintage’ out so much. I love old, unique things though – they tell a story. I knew that’s the style I wanted to go ahead with so I headed to Trade Days in Canton and bargained my way through the shops gathering random bottles and really anything that sparked my eye. The more random, the better. The backdrop at the ceremony was my favorite part of the decorations. With our venue, we had to create something to hide what was behind it. I brainstormed with my matron of honor and we came up with the idea of gathering different materials all in the white/ivory scheme and hanging them from rope. She lives in Northern California where she shopped the flea markets and found the most amazing fabrics – everything from an old wedding dress to lace curtains. We used muslin as the filler because it’s inexpensive and helped thicken it so you couldn’t see straight through it. We spent a weekend cutting the fabric, tying it to rope, and prepping it for the big day. It was the perfect backdrop – very “me” and I got to spend great time with my matron of honor creating it. We’ve been contacted multiple times about people re-creating it or borrowing it so it’s been fun to help inspire others!

We love the shoes….tell us more about those?

For some reason, I wanted my shoes to POP! I’m not a heels girls, I’m an everyday supporter of flats, so I wasn’t going to change that for my wedding day. I wanted comfort and color. Red had nothing to do with my wedding, but I’ll wear red flats with just about any outfit and people kept telling me “it’s your day, do what you want!” So I did and I wear them on a regular basis now which always makes for a fun story to tell people they were my wedding shoes.

How did you choose your wedding color palette?

Oh man, wedding blogs saved me! Purple is my favorite color so that was a no brainer. I wanted softer colors though to bring out the “spring” in the wedding. Getting married in February is hard because it’s kind of winter, but spring is right around the corner. I found a picture of a bouquet on a blog that I instantly fell in love with and used that as my inspiration.

Your dress is gorgeous, where did you get it and how did you know it was “the one”?

I got my dress in Tyler, TX at a boutique called Brides & Belles. I had no idea what kind of dress I wanted so I literally tried on every style possible the first time I went. I tried dresses on for hours and left that night in love with what I thought would soon become “the dress”. I headed to Dallas to check out options in the big city, but all I could think about that day was that dress. It was confirmed after shopping around that I knew exactly which dress I was going to walk down the aisle in…called them immediately to reserve it and didn’t look back once.

What song did you dance to for your first dance as husband and wife?

We danced to Ingrid Michaelson’s version of “Can’t Help Falling in Love”. Romantic and was the perfect length.

What was your “something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue”?

I took a piece of lace from my mom’s wedding dress and wrapped it around my bridal bouquet so be my “something old”. She was excited to have a piece of her walking down the aisle with me. My mother-in-law let me borrow her mother’s pearl necklace to be my “something borrowed”. Can’t go wrong with classy pearls. I chose undergarments to be my “something blue”.

What was your favorite part of your big day?

My favorite part of my big day…oh man, that’s hard! I would say my favorite part was feeling so calm and READY to marry Mike. Things didn’t go perfectly that day – one of the groomsmen forgot his pants so he was wearing jeans in half the pre-wedding pictures, ha! – but no matter what  happened, at the end of the day I was going to become the Mrs. Michael McGuire. I kept my eyes on that and got to soak up the day and enjoy each moment, laugh at the kinks, savor all the friends and family around me. The moment I caught eyes with my man at the end of the aisle, saw his heart melting smile…I’ll never forget it!

Do you have any advice for brides that are in the planning process?

It’s so easy to get wrapped up in creating the perfect day, getting wrapped up in all the details, but I think going into it with a realistic expectation that it’s more important to put effort and time into investing in your marriage than into planning your wedding day. It’s one day that is amazing and the best day of my life, but I had to often take steps back. It is so fun to make decisions and to make it a day that reflects you and your fiance well, but the day comes and goes so quickly. It becomes a memory in the matter of hours – granted it was the best day of our lives, but it helped us so much to take a step back from planning and see how we could invest in one another and our future marriage no matter what!

Thank you, Sara & Rocky, for sharing this amazing wedding with us!  Stop their site and check out more fabulous weddings! Please let them know that GSS sent you!  And Tamara & Mike, we wish you a lifetime of love, laugher, and happiness!  May every day be better than the last!
