GSS Featured Wedding :: Danielle & Richard in Champaign, Illinois :: Mark Romine Photography

We are thrilled to bring you Danielle and Richard’s gorgeous wedding from Champaign, Illinois today. Mark from Mark Romine Photography sent it to us via Two Bright Lights and we are so glad he did. Danielle was a treat to work with on the feature. Thank you all for sharing such an amazing wedding celebration with GSS!

How did you and Richard (husband) meet?
We met at the beginning of our freshmen year in college.  I grew up in a far south suburb of Chicago and Richard is from the northwest suburbs, but luckily we both decided to attend the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign.  I majored in accountancy and Richard is a high school social studies teacher, so the words destiny and fate mean a lot to us.  There’s really no other way to explain how our paths came to cross.  We didn’t start dating until halfway through our junior year, but we both still remember the first night we met.   I guess we subconsciously knew something special was in store for us from the very start.

How long have you been together?
We have been together for over 5 years.

How did Richard propose?
After we graduated from college, we each moved back home with our parents.  Unfortunately, they live about 75 minutes apart, so living at home only lasted a couple of months.  We decided to rent an apartment in a near west suburb of Chicago during our first year of work.  We already knew we were going to be together forever, so we soon began looking into purchasing our first home.  At that point, we were lucky enough to be able to move in with his parents for a few months while we were house hunting.  In the fall of 2008, we closed on our first place.  One thing to know about us is that our favorite number is 10 and for that reason, Richard chose to propose on 10/10/2008.  Richard coaches the boys cross country team at the high school where he teaches, so the fall is definitely his busiest time of year.  On top of that, we had moved into our house about a week before the proposal.  Needless to say, I did not expect him to propose during this hectic time.  He had a cross country meet the day he proposed, but had told me to be ready to go out for a nice dinner when he got home.  It was his way of saying thanks for all of the unpacking I had been doing during the week.  I remember being upstairs in the bathroom finishing my make-up and hearing him come home.  He yelled up to me to tell me it was time to leave.  When I stepped out of the bathroom, I noticed a trail of red rose petals leading me down the stairs.  The rose petals continued through our living room, dining room, kitchen, and the stairs to the basement.  When I got down to the basement, he was waiting for me on one knee with the most beautiful ring in his hand.  Having him propose in our first home made it even more special.

What sold you on your wedding venue?
Once we decided to get married in Champaign, a place that means so much to us both, the church was an easy decision.  It is right on campus and the church we attended when we were in school.  St. John’s is absolutely breath taking.  The decision to have our reception at the Hilton Garden Inn was based on two reasons.  First, we wanted to have our reception in a hotel or close to a hotel because most of our guests were coming from the Chicago area.  Second, we needed a reception venue that would hold around 350 guests.  We are both very lucky to have large families and circles of friends.  After doing some research, we decided the Hilton Garden Inn would work perfect for us.  They have a great space, plenty of hotel rooms, easy access, and a good menu.

Your dress is gorgeous, where did you get it and how did you know it was “the one”?
I got my dress from Michelle’s Bridal in Urbana, Illinois.  I had looked at a few wedding boutiques, but was having a difficult time making a decision.  I guess I just hadn’t found “the one” yet.  I tried on so many different styles, some of which I liked and some of which I absolutely hated, but none that said “yes, I’m the one”.  We decided to look at Michelle’s because that meant the dress would already be in Champaign and I wouldn’t have to worry about transporting it from Chicago and keeping it wrinkle-free.  I will say I waited entirely too long to find my dress, but it was definitely worth the wait.  I took my two sisters, my mom, and my future mother-in-law with me when I went to Michelle’s.  I always thought I’d be in a classic A-line dress, so when the bridal consultant asked me to try on a Maggie Sottero dress with a tight fitting bodice, beaded crystals, and a skirt that was gathered at various points, I didn’t quite know what to say.  She told me she thought I had the perfect body for it and just wanted to see how it looked.  I am more than ecstatic that I listened to her.  As soon as I walked out of the dressing room, I got ‘wows’ from everyone, including strangers.  I had narrowed my choices down between what I called the ‘wow’ gown and another dress that was beautiful and looked like something I would have chosen, but felt a little too safe.  I finally decided if my wedding day wasn’t the day to wear a ‘wow’ dress, I didn’t know what would be.  I have received so many compliments on the dress.  I am so thankful to my bridal consultant, Jen, at Michelle’s for getting me to venture outside my comfort zone.  I have never felt as amazing in a dress as I did on my wedding day.

How did you choose your wedding color palette?
That’s actually a really funny question.  I had originally wanted to have a classic black and white themed wedding.  My husband-to-be thought those colors were entirely too boring, so I left it up to him to decide.  Given that our wedding was to be held at our alma mater, he decided blue and orange were just the right colors for us.  I’ll admit I was a little nervous to begin with, as were just about every family member we told, but I think it was the perfect choice for us.

What was your “something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue”?
My something old was also my something borrowed.  My older sister has a very special ring my grandmother left her when she passed away because they shared the same birthstone.  It meant so much to have a little piece of her with me on such an important day.  My something new was a six-pence a family friend gave to me for good luck.  Richard had gotten me a gorgeous strand of pearls as a wedding gift, but I didn’t get to wear them during the ceremony because of the neckline of my dress.  My something blue was the pair of Kenneth Cole navy blue ballet slippers.  They fit right in with the wedding colors.

What was your favorite part of your big day?
Is everything too much to say?  I loved going to the hair salon with all of my girls.  I loved getting ready and having my sisters and my mom help me into my dress.  I loved the look on my dad’s face when he walked into the suite and saw me for the first time that day.  I loved that our photographer, Mark, had suggested a private meeting between me and Richard before the ceremony.  It was exactly what we both needed.  I loved the butterflies in my stomach waiting for my dad to walk me down the aisle and then seeing all of the family and friends there.  I loved riding in the limo with our wedding party, making random stops, and finally getting to the reception.  We had such a great time at the reception and the impromptu post reception party we held in the hotel lobby.  Most of all though, I think my favorite part of our big day, was standing at the front of the church amongst all of our family and friends, but feeling like we were the only two there, like we were in a world of our own.

What type of cake did you have?
Neither one of us really like cake, but we both love tiramisu.  We had a two-tier tiramisu cake for the cake cutting.  For the guests, we also had two cupcake trees with chocolate, vanilla, and red velvet cupcakes, as well as mini cupcakes with fondant monograms.  We were lucky enough to have a dessert table with assorted pastries.  The dessert table was extra special because it was filled with goodies made by family and friends.

What song did you dance to for your first dance as husband and wife?
Our first dance was to “You & Me” by Dave Matthews Band.  We had a difficult time coming up with the song for our first dance.  I like country music and Richard, well doesn’t.  A friend of actually recommended the song we eventually chose and after listening to the words, we decided it was the one.

Do you have any advice for brides that are in the planning process?
Don’t be afraid to ask for help getting items checked off the ever growing To Do list.  I am someone who needs to be in control, so it was very difficult to delegate tasks to my mother, bridesmaids, fiancé, etc.  As I got closer to that big day though, I would have gone crazy without them.  Also, remember that all of the stress and anxiety is worth it.  In the end, all of the planning will lead to one of the greatest days of your life.  You get to share it with everyone you love and will have so many wonderful memories to cherish that the time spent worrying will seem like a small price to have paid.

Reception Venue: Hilton Garden Inn

GSS Featured Wedding :: Kristin & Chris’s Chicago Wedding at Morton Arboretum :: Olivia Leigh Photographie

You’re in for a treat today!  Today we have a fabulous submission from Olivia of Olivia Leigh Photographie.  Olivia Leigh Photographie is one of our preferred vendors and sponsors of GSS!  So please join us in giving Olivia a great BIG warm welcome to GSS!!!  Olivia Leigh Photographie is based out of Chicago, Illinois.

Kristin and Chris were married just outside of Chicago at the Morton Arboretum in a gorgeous outdoor summer ceremony on August 6, 2010.  Olivia was kind enough to fill us in on all of the awesome details of this beautiful wedding:

“This was a sweet little wedding from this summer. The couple, Kristin and Chris, held a wedding just a few miles from where Kristin grew up, at the beautiful Morton Arboretum, about 30 miles outside of Chicago. The Morton Arboretum is a nonprofit organization situated on 1,300 acres of land, dedicated to the planting and conservation of trees. It is a lush and forest-like space that is such a retreat for visitors. Kristin looked beautiful in a romantic, almost storybook gown from Pronovias. Chris looked so dapper in his slightly vintage-leaning gray suit, which the florist beautifully set off with a lovely boutonniere that completed Kristin’s all-white bouquet. The couple saw each other for the first time at the venue, choosing to do a “private vows” ceremony, where they read personal vows to each other as part of their first look. This was an emotional and touching moment that is one of my favourite suggestions for couples looking to incorporate a personal touch into their day in a still intimate and private fashion. So lovely. After seeing each other, we took a series of beautiful portraits around the property. Kristin and Chris held their ceremony just as the sun was beginning to set, on the sprawling lawn in front of a large tree. As the golden sun peeked out behind the leaves it created such an ethereal and romantic backdrop to their vows. Following the ceremony, guests retreated to the reception site, enjoying cocktails on the patio and dinner inside the education center, where both Kristin’s  and Elizabeth Wray Designs‘ visions combined to create gorgeous rustic-vintage table decor. After rousing toasts, guests moved into the dance room to enjoy a special choreographed first dance (complete with a lift!) from Kristin and Chris that honored her background in dance, followed by a night of less rehearsed dance moves. :) It was such a beautiful day!”

Thank you so much, Olivia, for sharing this amazing wedding with us!  Please stop by her website and show her some love!  And Kristin and Chris, we wish you a lifetime full of love, laughter, and happiness!!!  May every day be better than the last!

GSS Featured Wedding :: Katie & Dan ‘s Fun Dallas Wedding :: Wisner Photo

Today we are thrilled to share the stunning wedding imagery from Cristina Wisner of Wisner Photo. We saw the bouquet toss in a sneak peek and our jaws dropped…its fun, fresh and so innovative. We expect this to start trending now…believe it, its the newest wedding trend. Katie and Dan are adorable and their wedding photographs are amazing! Thank you so much Cristina for sharing your incredible work with us. We always enjoy having you on GSS. We were able to catch up with Katie for a Q and A….without further ado….

How did you and your husband meet?

Although Dan and I met in college, we didn’t begin dating until a year after we graduated. We had always run around the same group in college and when our mutual friends started getting together and engaged, it was only a matter of time. We both happened to move to Dallas after graduating from OU and spent the first year of “the real world” as friends but at a mutual friend’s wedding in Florida, we finally admitted we might just be more than that.

How long have you been together?

3 years – June 2008 – Since the first kiss in Florida at our friends’ destination wedding

How did he propose?

His main goal was to surprise me. We had just spend “pre-Christmas” with his family in Houston and were spending one night in Dallas, then moving on to my family in Tulsa. On that night in Dallas, Dan was adamant about going on a double-date. I was exhausted but just went with it. We got to the Dallas Arboretum and walked through a museum of Nativitys in this old mansion. It’s not really any of our style, but I had no idea it was just an excuse to get me to the Aroboretum. When we went around the back, our friends disappeared and we were just standing on the back of the mansion, overlooking the lake. Suddenly, I saw Dan get down on one knee. The rest is just a blur! Looking back, I realize he brought over pizza from our first date spot for dinner at the beginning of the night. I had no idea it was coming, especially on a “double date.” After he proposed, we returned to my apartment, where friends were waiting to celebrate. The very next day, he had planned an engagement party with all my high school friends in Tulsa.

We love bouquet – could you share more about the detail of it?

The bouquet was one of my favorite parts, too! I happen to love pearls, so my only request of the whole bouquet was to include stephanotis with white pearls in the centers. The attachment around the stems is my mother’s charm bracelet. I bought it for her for Christmas when I was 14 and bought her a charm for nearly every holiday. Unfortunately, in April of 2010, she was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s Disease, also known as ALS. In October 2010, three days after she visited Dallas to watch me lead a team in the Walk to Defeat ALS, she returned home and passed away. (Just a month before Dan started plans on my engagement ring) I really wanted to honor her in my wedding, she was my best friend, and it wouldn’t be right to not include her in some way. (My Grandma and Dad took the flame from my mom’s memory candle to light the our family side of the unity candle at the beginning of the ceremony, too)

What sold you on your wedding venue?

We chose Cityplace because of it’s location and city feel. We really wanted something near our church, near our area of town that we fell in love with, the M Streets and Uptown areas. We loved the floor to ceiling windows and the catering was amazing. Cityplace offered amazing service and took pride in the details.

Your dress is gorgeous, where did you get it and how did you know it was “the one”?

Thank you! I had an idea in my head that I wanted pick-ups on my dress and more than half-way through my dress shopping day, I felt really discouraged. Finally, my friends and I went to Circle Park Bridal, a spot known for both off-the-rack and custom-ordered dresses. It’s an adorable boutique. We found it on the rack, in my size, and I was immediately giddy to try it on. Once I put on the Mori Lee gown, I was smiling again. All the girls were thrilled when I came out of the dressing room and had the same “the one” reaction. To make it my own, I picked out the broach to have sewn on, and I had buttons made to extend the buttons from my mid-back, to the end of my train. On top of all that, “the one” was the CHEAPEST dress I’d tried on all day, so I was able to add those custom touches.

What was your wedding color palette?

Black and white, with red as the accent color. I just think black, white, and pearls are so timeless and classy.

Describe what it was like to have your “not so traditional” formal portraits around the Dallas area? (we think they are stunning!)

Part of the fun of Dallas is that it’s a big city. We totally embrace that. We loved the idea of having traditional shots at the church, but the city shots are of us being ourselves with our friends, and definitely the ones that will be framed in our house. Plus, it’s hard to use Cristina’s talent to the fullest if she’s only taking pictures at an altar!

What song did you dance to for your first dance as husband and wife?

We chose to dance to “Feet Don’t Touch the Ground” by Stoney LaRue. We love Texas and Red Dirt country and spent countless dates going to as many country concerts as possible. (We even hired a Texas country cover band for the wedding and I bought red cowboy boots to change into at the reception)

What was your “something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue”?

Something old was my mom’s charm bracelet, something new was my jewelry, something borrowed was the flower in my hair (two of my best friends wore it in their weddings and my maid of honor is next up to wear it – we’re all 4 highschool best friends and have been in each others’ weddings) and something blue was that I painted “I” and “Do” on my shoes in blue on the bottom. Cristina got some cute pictures of that.

Do you have any advice for brides that are in the planning process?

Make it your own! It’s so easy to get caught up in worrying about your guests having a good time, but in the end, you realize the only person who really notices is you! So make it what you’ve always wanted it to be. But stick to your budget! It’s no fun if you’re still paying for it after the honeymoon.

What was your favorite part of your big day?

I loved exchanging presents with Dan on either side of the column at the church so we couldn’t see each other before the wedding. It was intimate and filled with anticipation and excitement. Aside from that, I loved the time between the wedding and reception, taking pictures and riding the bus with our closest of friends. It was quality time with my new husband!

Here are a few of her bridal portraits at the Stoneleigh in Dallas, Texas….LOVE!

GSS Wedding Trends in Guestbooks :: Grandma’s Guestbook, Be Gone!

We’ve all seen the traditional guest book where each guest signs his or her name on a line, recorded for posterity, and sure to be stuck on a dusty bookshelf or in a keepsake box rarely to be viewed.  However, for the bride who wants to try something a little more creative, the guest book can really be an area to have fun and show some originality. Some of my favorite wedding trends in guestbooks are include:

Wishing Tree
A wishing tree is a fun décor piece that can be customized to match your wedding colors. Guests simply write a special message or wish for you on small cards with ribbon affixed to them. The wishes are then hung from the tree and then removed after the wedding and placed into a scrapbook!

Mad Libs!
For the playful, silly, and fun couple, create a custom “Mad Lib” for the bride and groom and have guests complete it during cocktail hour! Who knows what hilarious creations they will come up with!

Polaroid Guest Book
For a fun and interactive activity, position a Polaroid camera on a table with supplies and have an assistant snap pictures of guests for them to then adhere to a scrapbook with a special message! These pictures get more fun as the night goes on!

Art for Your Home
Instead of having guests sign a matted picture of the two of you, why not change things up a bit and create a custom art piece for your home? Here we have used a historic picture of the venue where the wedding reception was held and guests signed their names around it. A map of the city where the two of you met or were married, a painting of a place that has special significance for you, a family crest, etc etc – the possibilities are endless for what you could have matted and signed in lieu of a traditional guest book.

Engagement Album Guest Book
You are likely to have an engagement shoot captured by your wedding photographer prior to the big day. Most photographers offer an engagement album that can also double as your guest book with lots of space left around the pictures for guests to sign their name or leave you a little message. Best of all, the book itself becomes a wonderful coffee table décor piece in your new home together where you can smile at the pictures of the two of you while also reading your guests’ special words to you.

GSS Featured Wedding :: Shasta & Lance’s Mexico Beach Wedding :: Arden Prucha Photography

Today’s fabulous featured engagement comes from Arden Prucha Photography a Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas based wedding photographer.  Does her name sound familiar?  It should!  We featured the amazing engagement session of Shasta & Lance back in December.  If you have never laid eyes on their super HOT engagement session, please click here to check it out!  And we’re so honored to being featuring their wedding today!!!  Arden has been so sweet and accommodating to GSS and we have truly enjoyed working with her on this feature.

Shasta and Lance  were married on February 5, 2011 in Playa del Carmen.   Shasta was kind enough to answer a few questions for us:

How did you and Lance meet?  We met through mutual friends. I was finishing school and waiting tables and he came in with some friends. I blew him off on our first date- haha. Then we finally went out and I was in love.

How long have you been together?  We will be together two years in April. A true whirlwind romance.

How did Lance propose?  He got his mom and sister to come kidnap me for a day of shopping. I arrived home that night to a long stem rose on the door with a note. I opened the front door and there were over 200 candles and flowers everywhere. Took my breath away. There was a trail of Hershey kisses throughout the house with long stem roses and letters about why he loved me so much that he had hand written. I walked into the bedroom and he was on one knee. I started bawling. I couldn’t tell you what he said I just remember holding his face in my hands because his sweet voice was shaking.

What made you decide on a destination wedding?  We chose a destination wedding because we both wanted a non traditional more personal wedding. We both love the beach and both of our families are small and love to travel. I would definately recommend a destination wedding to anyone who is considering!

What sold you on your wedding venue?  We knew that we wanted to have our wedding in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico because that is where we had our first vacation and it only takes 2 hours to get there. I researched resorts for many many hours! I fell in love with Azul Sensatori because of the beautiful modern decor and their attention to detail of weddings. It was an all around wonderful experience.

Your dress is gorgeous, where did you get it and how did you know it was “the one”?  Thank you! I found my dress at Stardust Celebrations in Dallas, Texas. I tried on about 14 dresses and saved my favorite for last. It was a beautiful Monique Lhuilllier. I put it on and my mom said i had the biggest smile on my face and i said “This is IT”!

What song did you dance to for your first dance?  Brad Paisley “Then” Its an amazing song :)

What was your “something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue”?  My something old was my great grandmothers hankerchief, something new was the diamond earrings my dad gave me, something borrowed and blue was my mother’s garter.

How did you choose your wedding color palette?  My favorite color has always been blue and I met with my wedding invitation designer and she had these beautiful peacock blue envelopes and I went from there. Its a hard color to match! Then i loved the blue with hot pink flowers.

Do you have any advice for brides that are in the planning process?  The main advice I would have is go with what you want. Don’t try and please others. Be true to what you feel in your heart and it will turn out beautiful!

GSS Featured Wedding Pro :: McGowan Images :: Ross & Jen’s Travel Themed Engagement Session

A giant THANKS to Chelsea from McGowan Images for sending this fun travel themed engagement session in from Texas. Jen and Ross wanted to have a travel themed engagement session to bring out their personalities in the shoot. We were able to catch up with Jennifer and ask her a few questions…Take it away Jen!

How did you and your fiance meet?
We are high school sweethearts. We went to a small high school so knowing we “knew” each other before we ever really knew each other.

How long have you been together?
6 and a half years.

How did he propose?
It’s kind of funny… We were joking around about ring shopping with his mom the night before a shopping trip. The plan was if his mom mentioned shopping for a ring we would. Of course we stopped at a bank and his mom turned to him and asked if he needed to get money out for a ring. I thought he was going to die. Then he was like a deal’s a deal. So we shopped (this whole time I was thinking it was just for fun) Then we found the perfect ring so he bought it. I thought he would hold onto it for awhile, but he lasted all of the car ride home. We were at his parent’s house about an hour later when he dropped down on one knee and asked. It was simple, spontaneous, and very us.

Where are you getting married?
Runaway Bay Country Club, Runaway Bay Texas

What sold you on your wedding venue?
It is just a couple miles from my (Jen’s) home. I have played golf there and went to Sunday lunch every Sunday after church since I was little. When we were thinking of places to get married we wanted a place that had history with us, but would also let us do what we wanted. We are in school five states away so I didn’t want to deal with people that I didn’t know or trust. The Club had everything we wanted and it was the perfect size and in the right location.

Tell us about your wedding dress?
My dress is a Maggie Sottero. It is a champagne color with lots and lots of pearl and crystal beading. To me it is very romantic and elegant, which is exactly how I want to feel on my wedding day.

We love the theme….tell us more about that?
The theme from our engagement session fit right in with the theme for our wedding.  We are going for a whimsical vintage shabby-chic vibe. Everything is going to be eclectic, nothing will match, but everything will complement.

What is your wedding color palette?
Shades of plum, charcoal grey, and a sagey-lime green

Do you have any advice for brides that are in the planning process?
Take your time and enjoy it. You don’t get to plan any other event as important or special as your wedding day. Make sure that you have what you want, and that you use all of your resources. There is no reason to go broke paying for a wedding.

What has been your favorite part of planning your big day?
I would have to say the actual act of planning. It has been great to bond with my family and Ross’s as we have chosen everything we want for our wedding. We have a great support system, and that has made this process so much fun!

Thank you so much, Chelsea, for sharing this engagement session with us!  Please stop by her blog and show her some love!  And thank you, Jen and Ross for sharing your fun themed engagement portraits with us and for taking the time to answer our questions!  We wish you both a lifetime full of love, laughter, and happiness!!!  May every day be better than the last!
