GSS Featured Wedding :: Nicole & Derek’s Major League Baseball Themed Wedding :: GLK Creative

long island new york baseball themed wedding glk creative (1)

How exciting to say you work for MLB.com? Nicole can say just that! It was only fitting for their wedding to have a baseball theme and we are loving all of the fun details. Being in Texas, we are especially the Texas Rangers ones! GLK Creative sent us this great baseball themed wedding via Two Bright Lights. Nicole and Derek’s wedding is lively and full of color and FUN! We were able to catch up with Nicole and ask her a few questions about the wedding and her relationship with Derek…

How long have you been together?

We’ve been together for 8 years.

How did he propose?

It was 4-5-2010, the Mets home opener. Being Mets fans, we look forward to the start of the season, and the home opener is like a holiday for us. We both take off of work and either go to the game or go out and watch it. I had just come back from walking our dog, Tina, when Derek had breakfast prepared. I also noticed a card on the table and I remember asking him what the card was for. His reply was, “It’s Opening Day, it’s our holiday!” It made sense to me, so his plan was still intact and I had no idea what was coming. I opened the card and read all the metaphors about baseball and love and found it so touching. Then I got to the end saw the words “Let’s Get Married!” I put down the card and saw the ring in the opened box on the table and honestly couldn’t believe what was happening. I asked Derek a few times if he was serious, and then I accepted. We met up with some friends and watched the Mets win their first home game of the season!

What sold you on your wedding venue?

We had been to Studio Square many times since it had opened and loved the beer garden atmosphere. When they opened their event space, we knew that it was something we wanted to look at when that time came. We talked about the place as a venue for our wedding before we even really talked seriously about marriage, if that even makes any sense. The loft space and amazing views of Manhattan were two big selling points.

Derek and I had both felt strongly about not choosing a traditional space. A wedding is really just a big party and we wanted to pick a space where we could distill that essence, a place where formality and pomp and circumstance were not exuded by the space itself. Studio Square had none of that traditional, stuffy, matrimonial “baggage.”

We also wanted to craft our menu around ballpark-type foods served buffet style. We agreed that the best parts of most weddings is the cocktail hour, and we wanted the whole wedding to be like one long cocktail hour; were the guests weren’t forced to eat at specific times. This space really allowed for that sort of vibe and allowed everyone to have fun and not be tied down to a predetermined party schedule.

Your dress is gorgeous, where did you get it and how did you know it was “the one”?

Thank you! My mom and I had looked only one other place before we ended up at RK Bridal. My cousin had gotten her dress there and I had heard great things about it so we decided to give them a shot. Initially I had an idea in my head about what type of dress I wanted and what they say is true, try something out of your comfort zone and it will probably end up being the dress you pick! After trying a few styles, I decided that a trumpet-style dress best complemented my body type. It was between the one I picked and another similar style. We brought my grandmother with us to help decide and we all sort of knew when I put on this dress, that it would be the one I ended up purchasing. I can’t really pinpoint how I knew, since I didn’t have an emotional reaction, and since my mom liked everything I tried on, as any mother probably would. I think it was when I saw my grandmother’s face and the genuine feeling she had when seeing me in the dress for the first time.

We love the shoes….tell us more about those?

Thank you again!! I knew I wanted to wear blue shoes and I absolutely loved the shoes that Carrie Bradshaw had bought in the first Sex and The City movie. It seemed appropriate to wear those because Mr. Big proposes to Carrie and slips the shoe on her foot. Plus the name of the shoe is “Something Blue.” I was considering buying knock-offs because they were so expensive. But, Derek is actually something of a shoe, or rather sneaker, connoisseur himself. One night, he approached me (after a few drinks) and told me that as a self-respecting sneaker junkie, there’s no way he would allow me to wear imitation Manolo Blahnik’s to my wedding, and basically just announced that he was going to buy me the real thing as my wedding gift. I couldn’t have asked for a more fabulous present, and poured him another drink ASAP in to see if I could induce any additional, similar offers.

long island new york baseball themed wedding glk creative (5)

How did you choose your wedding color palette?

Derek and I are huge Mets fans so choosing orange and blue was an easy decision

We also love the unique touches throughout the centerpieces….tell us more!

I’m not too into flowers and I didn’t want overpowering floral centerpieces that no one would pay attention to and that we’d end up throwing away anyway. When I met with Charles at United Floral, he came up with the idea of the wheat grass in small cylinders and placing a few orange Gerbers in with a baseball item. It was up to Derek and I to choose the item and we though baseball pennants went perfectly. It wasn’t over-the-top, it was understated. Charles had worked other events at Studio Square so he knew how to dress up the space without going overboard, it was perfect.

What song did you dance to for your first dance as husband and wife?

Stay With You by John Legend

What was your “something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue”?

Well the blue was obviously the shoes! I would say that my dress was the new – don’t all brides say that? I was wearing a diamond and sapphire bracelet of my grandmother’s that was borrowed and my something old was the engagement ring. That is also my grandmother’s and she gave to Derek and I. Derek didn’t change anything about the ring and that makes it more special. That and knowing my grandmother cherished it during her 60 years of marriage to my grandfather.

Do you have any advice for brides that are in the planning process?

I think one of the biggest things is to keep in mind that this wedding is for you and your fiancé and no one else. If you try to make everyone happy, you’ll drive yourself crazy. Planning any big event will create some level of stress; that’s unavoidable. But, if the exercise feels like a job, you’re doing it wrong.

What was your favorite part of your big day?

This is a tough one. There were so many moments that I enjoyed and everything goes so fast that day. I think my favorite part was seeing how much fun everyone was having, that those who you wouldn’t expect to see dancing, were. Derek and I felt that we had accomplished what our dream was, to have a big party, and that’s evidenced by the great photos our photographer George took at the reception.

GSS Featured Anniversary Session :: Travel Inspired Photo Session :: Heather Annette Photography

Happy Hump Day, Lovelies!!!  Today’s fabulous feature comes from Heather Ferguson of Heather Annette Photography, a Utah based wedding photographer.   Heather has been so sweet and accommodating to GSS and we have truly enjoyed working with her on this feature.

Without further ado, here is Melinda and Steven’s chic travel inspired anniversary session.  Melinda was kind enough to answer a few questions for us:

How did you and Steven meet?  He was my brother’s best friend. He had no interest in me in high school (being 3 years older than me). I, of course, looked to him as the “cool” kid that everyone loved. He seemed to be admired by every click andor group you could think of. After high school, I was attending BYU and living in Provo. He returned from his mission and roomed with my brother. We hit it off there.

How long have you been married?  Two and a half years.

What has been your favorite part of being married?  My favorite part of being married has been being able to enjoy each other all the time. The different angles and situations that we can love each other in has been a fun aspect.

What advice do you offer to newlyweds?  Advice to newlyweds: The Golden Rule! If you don’t want someone treating you a certain way, or having unrealistic expectations, then don’t do that to your spouse. Especially the man you love. If something needs to be done, do it yourself or don’t say anything at all. No one likes to be told what they’re not doing, or could be doing “better.” We’re all human.

What one item off of your wedding registry have you used the most?  Vidalia Chop Wizard

What made you want to do an anniversary shoot?  We realized that after a few years of being married, we hardly took photos the way we did when we were dating. We thought it would be fun to be able to look back on. I remember my grandma saying that when you’re old, you look at photos of yourself when you were young and think, “Hey, I was better looking or thinner or whatever than I gave myself credit for.”

What made you choose Heather as your photographer?  Heather has a unique ability to capture emotions that we often perceive as sparks, or fleeting moments. I wanted to be able to have a tangible representation of what we (my husband and I) feel towards each other. Sometimes you get so caught up in the day to day things that you fail to recognize that the “spark” is still there. Seeing it in a photograph and having it forever extends those fleeting moments into lasting, concrete memories. Heather is excellent at capturing an emotion and expanding it into something lasting.

Thank you so much, Heather, for sharing this amazing engagement session with us!  Please stop by her website and blog and show her some love!  And thank you, Melinda, for taking your time to answer our questions!  We wish you and Steven a lifetime full of love, laughter, and happiness!!!  May every day be better than the last!

GSS Tips from a Wedding Planner :: Use of Gray!

Gray has been a popular “base” color for quite some time and has replaced black as probably the most common color of this nature for a few years now.  Gray pairs beautifully with many colors such as fuchsias, purples, reds, and oranges. Probably one of the most stunning color combinations with gray is gray + yellow, and another one which is a little further departure is gray + green. Yellow “pops” amazingly against a gray backdrop and there are many different options for yellow flowers from the traditional yellow rose to the modern yellow pincushion. The options with greenery and green flowers is immense as well. Try using green cymbidium orchids or green hydrangeas for a classic look or succulents and mosses for a more modern edgy feel. And with these pairings, gray is no longer a dull, basic color but rather elegant and eye-catching!

GSS Featured Wedding :: Talina & Keith’s Houston Wedding :: Zasey Photography

Happy Hump Day, Lovelies!!!  You’re all in for a treat today!!!  Man, our submissions just keep getting better and better!!!  Today’s fabulous featured wedding comes from Amber Strickler of Zasey Photography, a Houston, Texas based wedding photographer.  Amber has been so sweet and accommodating to GSS and we have truly enjoyed working with her on this feature.

Talina and Keith were married on March 12, 2011 at Agave Road in Katy, TX.  What an amazing venue!  Talina was kind enough to answer a few questions for us:

How did you and Keith meet? Keith and I met on Match.com! We exchanged emails and chatted on the phone for about 2 weeks until I asked him to meet up in person…I was pretty gutsy!! ;-)

How long have you been together? We’ve been together 3 years & 2 months.

How did Keith propose? Oh wow it was amazing and I was totally surprised. It’s a long story, but let me try to give you a short version: We had been planning a trip to Boston to visit some of his friends–and stay with them. Also in the meantime we had picked out a ring, but I wasn’t aware Keith had it. Keith basically schemed with his friends in Boston and set up this whole elaborate plan for one of the nights we were there. Us and his friends had dinner plans one evening, but Keith’s friends all a sudden had an “unexpected friend” come in town and they had to go pick him up from the Boston Harbor Hotel & take him out to dinner. They asked that Keith and I meet up with them after dinner, for drinks. In my mind, I was so confused as to why Keith and I were not included for the dinner part, but went with it anyways because Keith and I were going to eat at this cute Italian restaurant that Keith’s friends had highly recommended. After dinner, we headed over to the Boston Harbor Hotel to meet up with his friends and the “unexpected friend”, for drinks in the “unexpected friend’s” hotel room. When we arrived, Keith and I walked directly up to the hotel room where Keith pulled out a hotel key! I was so confused how he had a key and right then Keith explained to me that he was surprising me with a room for the evening and that his friends brought all of our belongings to the hotel while we were at dinner. All a sudden I realized, there was no “unexpected friend” that came into town. Keith’s friends made that up so they could get out of the dinner plans with us and take care of everything for the evening…..and wow did they!!! I walked into the hotel room to find rose petals all over the floor & bed, champagne, strawberries and a view of the Boston Harbor from our window! It was gorgeous!! As Keith and I were checking out the view, I looked to my right and he was down on one knee asking me to marry him! :)   I was a ball of tears and smiles! Keith really did an awesome job and completely fooled me, which is very hard to do! It was an over the top evening!

What sold you on your wedding venue? The venue itself sold me! The moment my mom and I walked into the place, I said “where do I sign?” It’s gorgeous and nothing I had ever seen before! I had several other venue appointments and never went to the rest of them. Agave Road was the first place I went to and booked it that day! You totally feel like you are some place else there and that’s what I liked the most…..it wasn’t a “typical” wedding venue to me.

Your dress is gorgeous, where did you get it and how did you know it was “the one”? I got it at David’s Bridal, which was the last place I went to (out of 3 dress stores) and it was also the last dress I tried on. I knew it was the one because of the way it fit on me. I loved the style of the dress and the intricate beading on certain parts of it. When I put it on and saw how it really fit me like a glove, I knew it was the one!

How did you choose your wedding color palette? Well I knew I wanted deep purple (like an eggplant color) for sure….it’s my favorite color! Then I went to the bridal extravaganza in Houston and saw a place setting that was deep purple with accents of a bright green, almost a lime color. I thought it rocked!!! I loved it and that’s how I incorporated the green.

What was your “something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue”? Something Old: it was actually my grandmother’s silver cake cutter from her wedding. I was planning to use it at my wedding, but completely forgot to bring it to the venue! :(   Something new: my dress & jewelry. Something borrowed: my best friend/matron of honor’s veil from her wedding. Something blue: it was going to be a blue garter, but I ended up finding a super cute purple one last minute and couldn’t pass up using it! :)

What song did you dance to for your first dance? Faithfully by Journey

Do you have any advice for brides that are in the planning process? It’s NEVER too early to start planning!!! Getting the venue (and date) booked first, is a must, and then figuring our your guest list is also one of the first things to do, because everything you plan for, & order, is based off that headcount!!  Stay organized and ahead of the game and you won’t be as stressed towards the end. Also, soak up the wedding planning process….it happens once and it also flies by!

What was your favorite part of your big day? I have two! One was being walked down the aisle by my Dad and Step-Dad and seeing Keith for the first time at the end of the aisle. Life was so perfect in that moment. :)   The other is getting ready in the bridal suite with all my girls before the wedding…..it was so much fun and we had a blast!

GSS Wedding Day Tips :: Make Your Day Flawless and Beautiful

We hear it a lot….”what can I do to make my day go smooth and be carefree the day of my wedding?” We have a few tips to keep you focused on the most important thing and all the rest will fall into place.

1) Plan ahead. Have a wedding day timeline in place. Having a timeline for your big day is extremely crucial to keeping your events on course.  However, please note that issues WILL OCCUR at your wedding, no matter how much detail you have put into your timeline or how much planning you have done.  Groom Sold Separately HIGHLY recommends hiring an event planner or wedding planner to help you take care of such issues should they arise (and they will) on your wedding day so that you can relax and enjoy your wedding day. Its also a great idea to scout your location for the times you are wanting during that time of year for your wedding. The sun changes throughout the year and what you may think would be a great location for wedding portraits might change based on the location of the sun that time of day.

2) Have an wedding day emergency kit. Fill it with goodies that you may forget on your wedding day. Here is what they list is inside :: toothpaste, toothbrush, deodorant, tissues, hairspray, static remover, Band-Aids, mints, clear nail polish, bobby pins, double-sided hem tape, stain remover, pain relievers, sewing kit, super glue, brush, dental floss and lotion. Make your own list of items you normally use when getting all gussied up and then check off to make sure those things are in the your own survival kit. Give this task to one of your bridesmaids.

3) Make it pictures perfect…a few things to keep in mind with professional wedding pictures are they need light (good light), have lots of details, keep your dressing area clutter free, bring an extra hanger for your wedding dress, visit your wedding locations with your wedding photographer to make sure the light is great for your wedding day portraits and have a makeup trial to be sure your hair and makeup is exactly like you want it for your wedding.

image courtesy of Gabriel Ryan Photographers

4) Have snacks and water on hand – being hungry and dehydrated is the worst idea for an 8 hour event!

These are just a few tips for you to make your wedding day a dream come true. Some brides trust in wedding planners to help them make the day flawless. Review other events these planners have done and make sure they are the right fit for you. Talk to other brides and grooms that have used their services and get feedback from them about their wedding. We hope you have a smooth wedding and remember, the wedding is about marrying your best friend.

GSS Featured Engagement Session :: Meredith & Travis’ Home Run! :: Cory Ryan Photography

Disch-Falk-field-austin-wedding-photographer

Hooray for Fridays! That means we get to bring you a great baseball themed engagement session feature to feast on for the weekend. Cory Ryan Photography sent us this home run of a feature and we snatched it right up like a grounder. Meredith & Travis met on an elevator at the University of Texas, and are now engaged to be married in San Antonio, TX on November 12th, 2011. Travis is an assistant baseball coach at UT, and UT athletics play a big part of their lives together, so Disch-Falk field seemed to be the perfect backdrop for their engagement session! We were able to ask Meredith a few questions about her wedding planning and their relationship…

How did you and fiance/husband meet?

We met in an elevator on the way to study hall in college at the University of Texas at Austin.

How long have you been together?

It will be 5 years this October.

How did he propose?

He proposed at the country club where I grew up overlooking the 18th green on the golf course. I’m a golfer & played in college, which is part of the reason how we met. He played baseball, hence all the baseball photos!  =)

Name three words that describe your relationship with each other and were you able to incorporate that into your session?

Where are you getting married?

How did you choose your wedding color palette?

Iridescent Orange is our main color for 2 reasons: It’s a fall wedding and we’re diehard Texas Longhorns. Plum and gold are the accent colors. We chose those because they go beautifully together!

Do you have any advice for brides that are in the planning process?

Enjoy every second because it will go by so fast. Try to be very inclusive in the planning process with family members and future in-laws. They will truly appreciate the thoughtfulness.Disch-Falk-field-austin-wedding-photographer (13)Disch-Falk-field-austin-wedding-photographer (14)
