GSS Asks an Expert :: Destination Wedding Issues & Solutions with Lauren Schmidt of The Creative Touch Events by Lauren

June 2, 2010 |  by tamradunlap  |  WEDDINGS

A lot of couples nowadays are opting for destination weddings.  The idea of a destination wedding is very enticing… A beach wedding in the Caribbean or an old church in Rome… Oh so romantic!  However, there is a lot to consider if you decide on a destination wedding.  The Bride & Groom must consider not only issues such as where to get married and the expense, but also take into consideration their wedding guests.

Lauren Schmidt of The Creative Touch Events by Lauren has come on board with us to help you with common destination wedding issues by offering reasonable solutions.  Here are some questions that we have received from some of our faithful followers with answers by Lauren:

1.  How can couples avoid unnecessary tension with friends and family when planning a destination wedding?
Just like planning any wedding, be clear about the desires you have for your wedding.  Conduct research on the desired locations & provide cost comparisons so that you can show your family who may be contributing to the wedding.  Once your family & friends know that this is the perfect way for you & your fiance to celebrate your union, they will be much more supportive.

2.  If guests are traveling to a destination wedding, should they still/do they still need to bring a gift?
Gift giving for any wedding is not required.  You are not breaking any etiquette rules if you do not give a gift to the bride/groom at their wedding.  However, it is customary to bring a gift to the couple to mark the occasion.  So ,do so if you would like to.

3.  Who is usually responsible for hotel and airfare expenses for wedding guests?
Guests are normally responsible to provide their own travel expenses.  There are some occasions where the family of the couple will provide for their guests travel, but it is not the norm.  As a bride or groom, you do need to price airfare and hotel accommodations and provide your guests with a list so they are able to choose which will best fit their budget.  If the wedding is at a fairly expensive resort, you definitely want to provide a few close by, more cost effective hotels/resorts for them.  You will also want to book your stay early so you can negotiate group room rates in order to save you and your guests money.

4.  How can couples politely let guests know they are responsible for their own travel expenses?
When you send out your Save-the-Dates (these should be sent at least six months out) and/or invitations (these should be sent out at least two months out), it is common practice to  provide a list of accommodation and airfare prices.

5.  Would you recommend holding a reception once the couple is back home for friends and family who were unable to attend the wedding?
Absolutely, if it is in your budget to do so.  Your friends and  family who were not able to make the ceremony will still want to celebrate your union with you.

6.  How should you tell a couple if you are unable to attend their destination wedding?
You should let the couple know as soon as possible.  A destination wedding requires guest arrangements to be made well in advance.  Couples usually understand if your schedule or budget prohibits you from attending.  The couple will appreciate the courtesy of you letting them know so they can make the proper changes without penalty to their pocketbooks.

7. What should couples allow for in their budget to pay for guests attending their destination wedding?
The couple should show their appreciation by first having a welcome bag with a list of resort activities, wedding itinerary, maps, goodies, etc. for their guests arrival.  Usually, destination weddings are a smaller affair.  However, do not discount the fact that  the guests have spent a lot more to be able to share it with the couple.  With that being said, it is proper to invite them to the rehearsal dinner as well.  If this cannot be done,  invite the remaining guests for a cocktail or dessert following the rehearsal dinner.  And of course, the wedding reception food and beverage should be provided for all guests.

Wedding Cake Inspiration :: Artist Inspired Wedding Cake

June 1, 2010 |  by tamradunlap  |  WEDDINGS

In a previous post from April, we showed you an amazing cake that was inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright’s Kaufmann House.  Now, a bride named Lisa, had her wedding cake created after California artist Wayne Thiebaud‘s painted Cakes from 1963.  Lisa is a huge art fan and especially a fan of this particular painting.  So when it came to choosing her wedding cake, she chose ALL of Thiebaud’s cakes!  Great idea, Lisa!  These cakes make our mouths water just looking at them!!!  You can find more about Lisa’s wedding by clicking here.

GSS Featured Wedding Professional :: Wisner Photography :: Thailand Wedding

May 28, 2010 |  by amykarp  |  real weddings, vendor spotlight

Was there ever a time as a little girl you dreamed of finding a prince and having a wedding far, far away? Being from Texas and having a destination wedding in Thailand would certainly classify as far, far away. Cristina from Wisner Photography sent this gorgeous destination wedding to share with you and we lived vicariously through these images and dreamed we were in Thailand just for a second or two (or maybe a little longer!). Today we are bringing you a traditional wedding with a Thai fusion of food and customs with a good luck lantern send-off.  Kari and Pat, we enjoyed this wedding so much and wish you all an incredible journey together! Cristina also shared with us that she is rolling out her new photography blog today. Head over to www.wisnerphotoblog.com and be sure tell her we sent you :)

They were married on a beach in Phuket, Thailand and stayed at the Moevenpick Hotel and Spa on Karon Beach. Due to the heat on Thailand it was recommended that they use the flower most prevalent in Thailand – orchids.

Kari’s dress was a Palazzo purchased from Patsy’s Bridal in Dallas. Pat was stationed in Iraq on summer months when linen is not in stock so they couldn’t get him a suit from a store. The family imported linen from Italy and had a tailor make it for him so it was custom made.

They were able to enjoy themselves for some non-wedding social activities during the week as well. Some of the things they did were elephant trekking, white water rafting, kayaking mangroves, and a speedboat tour of the island.

GSS Wedding Inspiration :: “Green” Wedding Cake Stand Covering

May 26, 2010 |  by tamradunlap  |  WEDDINGS

We are seeing  the use of plant life for wedding cake stand covering more frequently.  This is such a clever, eco-friendly and not to mention beautiful idea!  This can easily been done at home if you are a DIY bride.  Just go to your local home improvement store and pick up some grass seed (wheat grass preferred), an oversized pan to be slightly larger than your cake stand, and some planting soil.  Put the planting soil in your pan, sprinkle some grass seed over the soil, water and watch it grow!  Lastly, cover the pan’s edges with some ribbon to match your wedding colors.  Voila!  You have a fabulous and “green” eco-friendly covering for your cake stand!

And this one even incorportated the wedding flowers, tulips!  So cute!

GSS’s Things We LOVE :: Prisma Design Couture Necklaces

May 25, 2010 |  by tamradunlap  |  WEDDINGS

These necklaces are just stunning!  They are made by Prisma Design.  Most of these designs start from scratch from a bolt of fabric, carefully cut into strips and then sculpted into ruffles.   They are then artfully combined with vintage styled appliques or satin and velvet.  These are perfect for that beautiful new dress or some would dress up that plain t-shirt (or tank top) and jeans look!  These necklaces could also dress up an otherwise plain bridesmaid or wedding dress!

You can purchase one of these beauties on their website.  You may get to their website by clicking here.

GSS Inspiration Board :: Sage Green & Black

May 24, 2010 |  by tamradunlap  |  WEDDINGS

Somehow the color combination of Sage Green and Black just seems to soothe us.  There’s just something tranquil about this board.  Don’t you think?  We love the idea of the bridesmaids wearing Black dresses and adding the Green in with accessories.  By choosing Black as the bridesmaids’ dress color instead of Sage Green, your bridesmaid will be more apt to get extra use out of their dress.  Plus, every girl loves little Black dresses! :)
