GSS Featured Wedding :: Jill & Derek’s Graphite Gray and Fuchsia Wedding :: Across the Miles Photography

Happy Hump Day, Lovelies!!!  We’re halfway through this work week! YAY!  Today we have a fabulous submission from Kellie Penn of Across the Miles Photography.  Across the Miles Photography is based out of Decatur, Illinois.

We’re totally in LOVE with Jill and Derek’s wedding color palette!  Jill chose the beautiful (fun yet classy!) color palette of Graphite Gray and Fuchsia for their October wedding.  We’re thinking we may just have to feature this superb color palette in one of our inspiration boards!

Jill and Derek were married at Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois on October 23, 2010.  Jill was kind enough to answer a few questions for us:

How did you and Derek meet?  While I was in grad school, my roommate was planning to study abroad for a semester.  Her parents threw her a going away party.  I attended the party and so did Derek.  He was randomly there hanging out with my roommate’s older brother.  My roommate’s mom was the one to introduce us.  After that, we were inseparable.  :)

How long have you been together?  We met on January 12, 2008, so almost three years.

How did Derek propose?  It was a Monday evening, December 28, 2009.  Three days after Christmas.  Derek and I had already exchanged presents.  I was at my house, getting ready to leave for Derek’s.  We were going to get something to eat and watch a movie.  Before I headed over to Derek’s, he told me that he had a surprise waiting for me.  Usually, a surprise from Derek means a bag of peanut M&Ms, (my favorite candy!), a bottle of wine or a new DVD.

Once I got to Derek’s, he said that he wanted to give me my surprise.  He told me to wait downstairs, while he ran upstairs to get it.  When he came back down, he told me to close my eyes and hold out my hands.  When I opened my eyes, a movie was sitting in my hands.  I wanted to watch Horton Hears A Who and Derek rented it for us to watch.  Then he said he had another surprise for me and asked me to close my eyes and hold out my hands.  When I opened my eyes the second time, a bottle of perfume was in my hands.  Derek bought me new perfume for Christmas, but it ended up being the men’s version, so he exchanged it for the ladies’, wrapped it up and gave that to me.  Then Derek said he had one more surprise for me.  I was really starting to wonder what he could possibly have to give me.  So, I closed my eyes and held out my hands for a third time.  When Derek said, “Open your eyes,” I did and saw him down on one knee holding an open ring box out.

What sold you on your wedding venue?  Because we were getting married in October, I knew I needed to pick an indoor venue, because I didn’t want to chance it with October weather.  I also knew I wanted something unique, cozy and fun.  I found this at the Richards’ Treat University Center at Millikin University in Decatur, IL.  The room was perfect.  One wall was all windows, looking out onto campus.  The two end walls were brick, complete with a fireplace and a sunken sitting area on one end.  It was absolutely magical.

Your dress is gorgeous, where did you get it and how did you know it was “the one?”  I got my dress at Michelle’s Bridal in Urbana, IL.  I knew that I wanted a mermaid style dress.  This was my first day trying on dresses.  My mom was with me.  When I tried on my dress I just knew it was the one for me, because it was fun, light, flowy, unique and fit perfectly!!  It was exactly what I had envisioned in my mind.

What song did you dance to for your first dance?  Sea of Love by Kat Power—from the movie  Juno, what we saw on our first date. :)

What was your something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue?

Something old:  A hatpin from my grandma

Something new:  My amazing shoes

Something borrowed:  My mom’s pearls

Something blue:  Blue undies—thanks to my friends!

How did you choose your wedding color palette?  This was a hard decision!  I love, love color and I had a handful of color combinations running through my head.  I would talk about them, assess them, look at color boards online, but to no avail.  Finally, Derek sat me down and wrote down all of the color combinations I was thinking of.  He really helped to organize my thoughts.  After looking at the list of colors and talking them through, I was finally able to narrow my colors down to fuchsia, graphite grey and a hint of cobalt blue!  Couldn’t have been happier!

Do you have any advice for brides that are in the planning process?  Don’t let the stress of little details come in between you and whoever else is planning the wedding with you.  My mom and I planned the entire thing ourselves, with no help from a wedding planner.  It is definitely doable.  You just have to be organized!!!  Also, add in details that make your wedding personal.  Make your wedding be the wedding where your guests will say, “oh yes, this definitely fits the couple!”

What was your favorite part of your big day?   I loved everything about my wedding day, but my favorite part was definitely our first look.  Being able to share the moment with each other was so special.  It definitely took the nerves away when it was time for me to walk down the aisle!
