GSS Featured Wedding :: Nikki & Blake’s Gorgeous Ashton Gardens Wedding :: Kelly Hornberger Photography

Happy Thursday, Lovelies!!!  Today’s fabulous featured engagement comes from Kelly Hornberger of Kelly Hornberger Photography, a Houston, Texas based wedding photographer.   Kelly has been so sweet and accommodating to GSS and we have truly enjoyed working with her on this feature.

Nikki and Blake were married on October 22, 2011 in a beautiful ceremony at the Ashton Gardens in Houston, Texas.  Nikki was kind enough to answer a few questions for us:

How did you and Blake meet?  Blake knew my family in high school through playing baseball with my older brother (Brian).  Both Blake and Brian ended up going to Stanford University to play baseball. Blake and I were introduced on a trip while I was visiting Stanford with my family.

How long have you been together?  Blake and I have been together 5 years.

How did your husband propose?  We went to Las Vegas with both his parents and my parents and surprised me with proposing and having Brian there too.(It was important to me that Brian be there for our engagement, because he is in the military and we weren’t sure if he would be able to attend our wedding). He got down on a knee in front of everyone at the Bellagio fountains then soon after that Brian and two friends from college came around the corner. It was amazing.

What sold you on your wedding venue?  Ashton Gardens was our wedding venue. The people were amazing there. Our wedding coordinator, Katelyn was so helpful. But we liked that location because we liked the idea of having the chapel and reception location right next to each other. We had a lot of out of town guests so location was another factor. Ashton Gardens was easy to get to from the airports, and our hotel we had rooms for our guests were 6 miles away.

Your dress is gorgeous, where did you get it and how did you know it was “the one”?   I got my wedding dress at Weddings by Debbie in Katy off of the Katy Freeway. I tried on two dresses and knew I was done. My wedding consultant actually showed me a dress in one of the books there and said “I think this dress would be perfect for you”, I said “ok” and ordered it. I had never actually tried on my dress until after I ordered it.  I just tried on styles similar to it. But it was a one strap and A-line just like I wanted, so I went for it.

What was your “something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue”?   My Something old and borrowed was my great grandmother’s ring. Something new- my wedding dress and Something blue -my underwear.

How did you choose your wedding color palette?   Our color palette was easy to choose. We both loved the deep, rich fall colors- so that was our inspiration. We chose the reds, yellows and oranges and to add a pop of something different we decided to do navy blue throughout the wedding.

What song did you dance to for your first dance?  Our first dance was Scotty McCreery, “I love you this big.”

Do you have any advice for bride and grooms that are in the planning process?  Our advice to other bride and grooms would be plan your wedding together. Blake was included in every decision that was made. He wanted to be included as well so it made it fun for both of us to be apart of it.

What was your favorite part of your big day?   My favorite part of the day was walking down the isle and seeing his face when he saw me all decked out and in my dress. I was so worried that he wouldn’t like my dress because before I went dress shopping he told me nothing “poofy”, he would like something more form fitting…well as you can tell from the pictures, that is not what he got. But he said he loved my dress and couldn’t have pictured me in anything else. I also couldn’t wait to see all of our planning finally come together, after almost two years.
