Today we are excited to share the work of Allison Davis Photography. This gal is one of the sweetest we know and we are 100% certain each and everyone of her brides feel the same way after reading this interview from Megan. She planned her wedding from afar, but it didn’t stop her from having a fabulous one….we can’t wait to see the images! Megan did her bridal session before her wedding at her reception venue, the YWCA in Fort Worth, Texas. Megan’s headpiece especially caught our eye – read more to find out what she says about it. Thank you both for being such a joy to work with on this feature.
Without further delay….take it away Megan…
How did you and your husband meet?
We met in Hawaii. I was going to nursing school and he was stationed as a Marine on Marine Corps Base Kaneohe. My good friend from school was married to a Marine and she invited me to go to wing night every Thursday night on base at the e-club. My now husband, Thaddies, worked as a bouncer there. We both saw each other but were both to chicken to actually say something. One night a whole group of us went out in Waikiki and from that night on we couldn’t get enough of each other. We originally were just going to be friends because I was graduating and he was getting out of the Marine Corps leading us both on separate paths in different states. After a couple of weeks of just hanging out and enjoying each others company we knew that friends was not where this relationship was heading and the rest is history. Now we are married and loving every minute of it.
How long have you been together?
We have been together for a little over 2 years.
How did he propose?
I will precursor this by saying my husband thinks that I am most beautiful when I first wake up in the morning. With that being said, I work night shift as an RN and Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and I had been sleeping from my previous nights shift when I felt a little tug and my hand. I woke up and there was Thaddies looking like he really had something important to tell me. He leaned on the bed and started telling me he wanted to talk to me and how he loves me so much and wants to give me the world and how he has had the best year of his life. I was still half asleep wondering why is he doing this right now (I hate being woken up for anything less than the end of the world and he knows that so it was a little strange) but I tried my hardest to seem awake and attentive. He then said “I am sick of being your boyfriend.” and that is when I woke straight up and was thinking he woke me up to break up with me, seriously? He then said “I want to be your husband” as he got down on one knee and pulled out a beautiful ring and said “Will you be my wife?” I said “Seriously? You’re not joking right now? This is real, really?” after about a minute of shock I said “Of course I will be your wife.” and the rest of that day was pure happiness.
Your dress is gorgeous, where did you get it and how did you know it was “the one”?
I had a vision in my head of what I wanted to look like and I found a dress by a designer that I loved and fit that image. So when we went dress shopping back in MN (no sales tax!!!) I found a shop that had that designer. When we got there, the lady said that designer was going out of business and all their dresses were 60% off. I showed her the pic of the dress and she got a sullen look on her face and said “We sold that dress last week, I’m sorry. But we have another dress that looks very similar from a different designer.” So I tried that dress on 3rd because I knew just looking at it that it was the one and I didn’t want the first dress I tried on to be it. And sure enough, I put it on and the tears started flowing. We ended up buying the dress from another store and it was perfect price and look.
We love your accessories (ESPECIALLY THE HEADPIECE!!)….tell us more about your necklace and headpiece?
I found the headpiece from an on-line vendor. I was skeptical at first because I am not a very fancy dresser and I felt like feathers might be a bit much but it looked like the perfect piece to accent the simple but elegant dress I bought. I turned out I was right, it was perfect. The jewelry I was worried at how I was going to get that look without spending a bunch of money. There is a website that most women are familiar with where you can rent designer bags but now they offer designer jewelry to rent too and that is where I found the necklace and earrings.
How did you choose your wedding color palette?
I had wanted a Tiffany blue wedding for a very long time because I just love how fresh and beautiful that color is plus who doesn’t like Tiffany’s jewelry? Chocolate brown just seemed like the perfect accent color.
Where did your portrait session take place?
It took place at the venue where the ceremony and reception took place, YWCA Fort Worth and Tarrant County. It is such an amazing and historic old building.
What was the thought process behind choosing your location?
Well, I was planning this entire wedding from Los Angeles and trying to do it on a budget at the same time. I never went and saw the venue in person, the website was all I had. I had been looking for about 2 months for venues before I found the YWCA. It is a popular wedding venue so I called as soon as I found it to see when they had days available. No weekends were open but there was one day that someone had reserved and they had 7 days to get their deposit in to secure it but if they didn’t, the day would be released. I sat on pins and needles for a week and in the end March 26 was meant to be our wedding day. My thought process I guess was what ever you can find that is beautiful, affordable, and has a day open that you want JUMP ON IT!!!! We are truly blessed with how well everything went.
Do you have any advice for brides that are in the planning process?
I don’t recommend planning from thousands of miles away unless you have a reliable helper in the area you are having the wedding. Thaddies’ sister lives in Dallas so she was able to help with the little details I couldn’t do online. Also, don’t sweat the small stuff. In the end, it really doesn’t matter. I can tell you that I am a total type A personality so it was hard for me to not sweat the small stuff but my wedding day went by so fast that if I would have still been focused on those things, I would have missed the little bit I do remember. As long as you and your husband/wife/partner are there, that is all that matters. Also, remember to plan the wedding for you, not everyone else because in the end all that matters is if you had a good time and enjoyed YOUR wedding day. Oh and do a bridal photo shoot, it makes you feel like the most gorgeous, amazing person in the world!
What was your favorite part of the day?
My favorite part of the day is when Thaddies and I stepped away from the wedding just to take everything in and be husband and wife alone for a few minutes. It is so easy to get caught up in all the craziness of family and friends pulling you in twenty different directions so it is important at one point during the wedding to get away, just you two, and be together. You don’t need to say anything or do anything, just be together. That was my favorite part of the day, just being alone with my husband.
