GSS Asks an Expert :: Destination Wedding Issues & Solutions with Lauren Schmidt of The Creative Touch Events by Lauren

A lot of couples nowadays are opting for destination weddings.  The idea of a destination wedding is very enticing… A beach wedding in the Caribbean or an old church in Rome… Oh so romantic!  However, there is a lot to consider if you decide on a destination wedding.  The Bride & Groom must consider not only issues such as where to get married and the expense, but also take into consideration their wedding guests.

Lauren Schmidt of The Creative Touch Events by Lauren has come on board with us to help you with common destination wedding issues by offering reasonable solutions.  Here are some questions that we have received from some of our faithful followers with answers by Lauren:

1.  How can couples avoid unnecessary tension with friends and family when planning a destination wedding?
Just like planning any wedding, be clear about the desires you have for your wedding.  Conduct research on the desired locations & provide cost comparisons so that you can show your family who may be contributing to the wedding.  Once your family & friends know that this is the perfect way for you & your fiance to celebrate your union, they will be much more supportive.

2.  If guests are traveling to a destination wedding, should they still/do they still need to bring a gift?
Gift giving for any wedding is not required.  You are not breaking any etiquette rules if you do not give a gift to the bride/groom at their wedding.  However, it is customary to bring a gift to the couple to mark the occasion.  So ,do so if you would like to.

3.  Who is usually responsible for hotel and airfare expenses for wedding guests?
Guests are normally responsible to provide their own travel expenses.  There are some occasions where the family of the couple will provide for their guests travel, but it is not the norm.  As a bride or groom, you do need to price airfare and hotel accommodations and provide your guests with a list so they are able to choose which will best fit their budget.  If the wedding is at a fairly expensive resort, you definitely want to provide a few close by, more cost effective hotels/resorts for them.  You will also want to book your stay early so you can negotiate group room rates in order to save you and your guests money.

4.  How can couples politely let guests know they are responsible for their own travel expenses?
When you send out your Save-the-Dates (these should be sent at least six months out) and/or invitations (these should be sent out at least two months out), it is common practice to  provide a list of accommodation and airfare prices.

5.  Would you recommend holding a reception once the couple is back home for friends and family who were unable to attend the wedding?
Absolutely, if it is in your budget to do so.  Your friends and  family who were not able to make the ceremony will still want to celebrate your union with you.

6.  How should you tell a couple if you are unable to attend their destination wedding?
You should let the couple know as soon as possible.  A destination wedding requires guest arrangements to be made well in advance.  Couples usually understand if your schedule or budget prohibits you from attending.  The couple will appreciate the courtesy of you letting them know so they can make the proper changes without penalty to their pocketbooks.

7. What should couples allow for in their budget to pay for guests attending their destination wedding?
The couple should show their appreciation by first having a welcome bag with a list of resort activities, wedding itinerary, maps, goodies, etc. for their guests arrival.  Usually, destination weddings are a smaller affair.  However, do not discount the fact that  the guests have spent a lot more to be able to share it with the couple.  With that being said, it is proper to invite them to the rehearsal dinner as well.  If this cannot be done,  invite the remaining guests for a cocktail or dessert following the rehearsal dinner.  And of course, the wedding reception food and beverage should be provided for all guests.
