Today’s wedding is from Alexi Shields Photography. She submitted this Japanese Garden wedding full of colorful details! The bride was radiant in her red Valentino pumps….a little non-traditional but we LOVE colored shoes for your wedding. We were able to ask Ashley a few questions about her wedding day and here is what she had to say….
How did you and your husband meet?
We met at a party when my best girlfriend and his best friend were dating each other. We hung out and talked for most of the night just the two of us and right from there we knew we had a connection. I was only 17 at the time and Russell was 19. Shortly after our first meeting we started dating
How long have you been together?
We dated at ages 17 and 19 for only about 9 months, which was a long time in high school. we had a mutual break up for reasons that neither one of us can remember. We didn’t even talk for almost 6 years after that, then one day out of the blue Russell ran into one of my old friends and they started to talk and my name came up. Russell then called me and invited me to a fourth of July BBQ at his house, I excepted the invite and we have been together ever since. That was July 4th 2007.
How did he propose?
We have a very open relationship in that we talk about everything, marriage was something that we both wanted and I knew that he had all the intentions of asking, that he just wanted to wait for the right time. He held onto the ring with out me knowing for 2 weeks before he asked me to marry him. He first got down one one knee in front of my dad when i has not around, and asked him if he would be his “father- in-law”. Russell has a good sense of humor like that. It was Easter morning 2009 and he had the help of my mother and my aunt. we always go over to my parents house in the morning and even thought all of my parent’s children are grown my mother still makes us Easter baskets. well, Russell hid the ring inside a pink plastic egg and had my aunt sneak it into my Easter basket. We all open our baskets as a family and once i got to that egg and opened it i was totally not expecting a diamond ring to pop out. He then got down on one knee in front of my whole family and asked me if i would marry him.
What sold you on your wedding venue?
We wanted something outside and Both Russell and i are interested in Japanese culture. Once we saw the lake at Morikami and the beautiful gardens we knew right away it was what represented us the most.
Your dress is gorgeous, where did you get it and how did you know it was “the one”?
My dress came from Elizabeth Charles Bridals in Greenacres, FL. I was pretty sure that i was looking for an A line dress but once I started trying them one nothing about them was jumping. It wasnt until i gave into my mother’s suggestion to try on my very large ball gown that once i looked in the mirror it was the one. I have a large bust and broad shoulders, so wearing a large ball gown helped balance me out. I loved all the crystals and the breathtaking cathedral veil.
You have a tattoo on your back that matches your flowers….share more about that please?
Again those flowers are my favorite and once i decided i was also going to have those for my bouquet, there sprung the idea for the tattoo so it could also be seen in my wedding dress.
How did you choose your wedding color palette?
My husband loves black and I love teal. But when we started to imagine my bridesmaids in teal dresses, i almost lost my lunch… i needed to come up with another color that complimented teal and black. Im actually not much of a pink person but once i was it next to teal i knew it would work. Plus my favorite flowers are stargazer lilys and cherry blossoms… both pink. After the wedding i must say im more of a pink person now.
We love the red Valentino shoes….tell us more about those?
I knew that i wanted something different for my shoes, I just wasn’t sure what. I was looking through a Vogue Magazine and saw those shoes in an ad. After that the hunt was on to find those exact shoes.
What song did you dance to for your first dance as husband and wife?
Keith Urban. Your Everything
What was your “something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue”?
old and borrowed: My Great Grandmother gold wedding ring that i wore on my pinky finger for the day. New: My dress.
Blue: my tossing garter
Do you have any advice for brides that are in the planning process?
everything happens for a reason, it will all work out. something will go wrong on the day of, but the bride will probebly be the only one that notices.
What was your favorite part of your big day?
Our first Kiss as husband and wife, I guess it wasnt so much about the kiss it self as it was knowing he loved me enough to marry me and we did it!
